Eldora 2/22

Headed up to Eldora for the 2nd day in a row. I'm not sure why as the snow isn't terribly good. They groomed most of the mountain (including things usually left ungroomed) 2 nights ago. It was a good decision because yesterday the few runs that didn't get groomed were east-coast scary. Last night we got a dusting, so there was some dust on crust which made for some fun turns. It also hasn't been too windy lately, which is nice. Here are some pics from my fancy new camera.

Nice to see you picking up the slack for EMSC while he's off playing Chief of Race!

How much? Today should be scary here, all right...12-16 new today, another 1-2 feet coming Sunday/Monday. :P

ya, but you need it out there or no one would be want to ski out there. if we got more out here, more people would show up and we don't want that, so you can have it and enjoy

Enough to make the groomers at Jay ski really really good today. Most groomer runs I have done all season and the Jet was actually respectable! Sorry Rog, didn't mean to take the wind out of your sails but we could certainly use some more fresh.

Any ways, on topic, along with Burke... Eldora was mentioned on this weekend's installment of NPR's Only a Game as a feature on smaller areas taking skier visits away from the bigger resorts due to less crowds and cheaper prices:

I didn't really mean to kindle the flames, but... I think Eldora might be one of the top 2 ski resorts on the East side of the Continental divide...

But on a serious note: Yep! Eldora is attracting tourons. There were at least 2 tour busses from the midwest up there on Friday. Very weird if you ask me. I wonder where they all stay.

i do love eldora although it's been 13 years since my last visit. just a nice feel to the place. living on the front range, between eldora and loveland, my colorado fave for pow and overlookedness, you got it damn good.
keep that fire burnin, if even just a little bit.

Eldora is a cool resort.TO bad you have to drive through Bowlda to get there. I skied there back when they first opened indian peaks (maybe 98') Towards the end of the day in early season, we would always poach lines and ride unopened trails. One time we came up on 2 patrolers at the bottom of a wooded cat track getting busy. The where shocked when I blew by them then started gettting dressed and yelling. They didn't give chase though.
If eldora is #2 east of the divide who is number 1, Snowy range? Stowe,SN or Jay peak. I kinda think sugerbush. Maybe Mt Tom or Powder Ridge.

timberline west virginia or little switzerland as i like to call it. best tree skiing east of any where that i've done. the bc skiing is unreal as well. moonshine flows from hoses there and folks are real friendly and heck do they love their skiing. highest valley east of the mississippi at 3300 ft tops out just shy of 5000 in places. remember the valentines day storm last year that hit some places in ne with up to 60 inches of snow?, well it came right through timberline and i happened to be lucky enough to be there before catching it in no vt wed-fri.
that's my vote for the whole experience of this sport we love

Not sure what that statement means -- since most everything is west of the Divide while Loveland/Abasin/Monarch/Wolf Creek straddle it.

I always thought Eldora was a nice day mountain that allows a rapidly expanding Denver metro area to ski under an hour and not deal with the i-70 traffic. However, unless its upslope storm, Eldora often misses out on the high country storms. So conditions-wise, it often lags a bit.

Ummm, to previous guessers, I think he was both kidding and not being too literal. Essentially saying Loveland and Eldora are the only two areas that most front range folks consider to be on the 'eastern slope' (though technically monarch, etc.. are as well)... Thus one of the 'two best' of the 'only two' here in CO. But then that's me guessing on his intent too...

This is not all that new, though maybe new for weekdays. Eldora is both closer and cheaper than most CO areas to the plains. So the last few years lots of church and other groups coming in from the plains, Denver inner city, Nebraska, etc... Eldora has been over 300,000 skier visits for at least the prior two seasons and I think on track for that this year again as well.

Actually that was a dig on east coast skiing. Saying that Eldora is one of the top 2 areas west of the divide... Meaning including from the divide to the Atlantic.

It was a joke... And clearly not a good one.

I'd say Loveland pretty well crushes nearly anything in the east (assuming decent snow year). Steeper steeps in sections off chair 1, quite a bit of bowl/above treeline, and no rain events to muck up the surface conditions every month (or even more frequently back east at times).

That said, for Eldora I would give it a qualified "It depends on the year". Such as last year, Eldora was not only better than anything east, but better snow conditions than nearly anything in Colorado too - certainly better snow than central CO mtns had (Eldora has some surprisingly good steeps in the glades, but no open bowls and respectable sized 1600 verts). Not that anyone who didn't ski Eldo a lot last year would likely believe that statement (but for the locals it's the snow year everyone will talk about for a long time). Even this year the snow has been decent and no rain events like the east gets so probably about as good as most places back east (for a mid-size place). Definitely not as good as rest of the west has been this year though. But there are plenty of years - probably about 40-50% of my 11 seasons there - that you might as well be skiing back east as you are skiing pretty much snowmaking only (or so it seems).

I'm sure I'll get some disagreement with the above, but that's still my 2 cent opinion/perception (I've been to something around 85 different ski areas, but not to the well over 100 of others on this board).

EMSC I would agree with you, living in Fort Collins for 10years I had more good days then not so good days at Eldora. Definietly better then 95% of the east skiing (have skiied 25 resorts east coast).
I forgot about Loveland that place is great on non windy days, great snow from the last 3 days as well (37").

Anyone know if Snowy Range is still open in Wyo, simalar to east coast ski resort there but better snow.

Yes. They had some problems a few years ago as I recall. I think their lodge burned down, but they eventually built a new one. I think I heard current owners were looking to sell though, so may not be open for too many more years.

If a resort like that was attached to a city like Fort Collins it would do well. Larmie has smaller pop and less desposible income so it is not a suprise to me. The snowmobiling up there is pretty good from what I recall as well.
