To my complete surprise the wife suggested I go skiing today. Suggestion made at 8:30am, and on the road before 9am
And what a great day to hit Eldora. No wind, and 5" overnight (but really more like 10" since the winds shut the upper mtn on Saturday). Not to mention the loss of power from a tree knocking out the power lines up to the area on Saturday as well. Surely not a good thing to be shut on a holiday Saturday. But totally my gain. And to boot Eldora had 22" in 7 days so while still thin in places, it skied great and with my intimate knowledge of the place I hit many untracked or barely tracked lines while mostly avoiding rocks (only a couple of minor scrapes). First by hitting Indian Peaks area for several laps, then some, ummm, hidden shots and eventually a half dozen runs down Salto and Moose glades. With snow anywhere from the reported 5" overnight (more wind blown areas), to over the boot top. Probably one of the best days to ski Eldora this season and - surprise - I got to be there! A big emotional high for the day for sure.
A mix of sun and remaining clouds drifted in and out eventually clearing by ~2pm when my wimpy legs gave out and i headed for home. So a little over 4 hours of continuous skiing since I ate lunch on the lift (OK, just a power bar). To my surprise after skiing somewhat tentatively last weekend, I was powering some great turns through the trees today right up until the last run or two. The kind of day I wish someone was ahead of me to get a picture of powder plumes in the trees. I incorrectly figured it wouldn't be worth taking the 'real' camera up the hill, but should have. Absolutely beautiful day with temps in the low 20's.
Cell phone pictures for you though. One more panoramic pic to insert tomorrow, and eventually I get to work on video from a previous outing at Eldora. I had some interesting camera angles on that one so I need to just do it!
