I skipped last week's possible effort as, well, too warm. So off to today for Chilly, Hard, fast groomers (yet again).
This season is possibly the worst I have ever seen at Eldora (there was one back in 2002 that was awful too). The mountain is skiing surprisingly well for what the mountain has to work with, but current conditions are NOT why people come up to ski. The place was practically deserted today. They have even stopped running the Indian peaks lift mid-week to save a few bucks (only a couple of trails on that lift anyway). I had a meeting in the morning in Boulder getting me a late start of 11:30.Temps were around 10-15F at the base depending on time of day, with a 5-10mph wind. It was sunny for the most part. right up until I left of course when it started to snow lightly. Despite nearly the entire state getting snow overnight Eldora picked up what can only in the most optimistic sense be called 1". Steamboat 24", Vail 8", my house on the flatlands 4", etc... Eldora - skunked on every single storm since December. I think they are up to 8" during January with 2 days to go. Crazy stuff.
Despite mother natures worst, the groomers actually ski pretty good, with a layer of fluff and generally speaking only a few scratchy spots. Today I wore the GS boards for some high speed turns. Heck It was a rare thing to have to worry about any other people on most runs. Super G here we come... I start a new job tomorrow, ending my weekday ski forays so that pretty much guarantees that Colorado will start to get decent snow soon. It's just the way my particular brand of Karma works.
