Day 13: Welcome to Tahoe-orado
Two series of huge storms over the past two weeks with only light wind (at Eldora anyway) and the second storm was much warmer and denser snow than typical Colorado fluff. Eldora hit the most recent storm cycle with 46" over about 4 days including a report of 14" on Sunday and 11" Monday (mostly overnight). It was mostly overcast with light flurries until noon-ish when a few squalls dropped a quick inch or two over the next couple of hours until it stopped snowing a bit after 3pm. Due to the well publicized storm cycle plus the Epic pass inclusion of Eldora it was fairly crowded early and it didn't help that I had an 8am meeting. I made it up around 10am and for the most part everything obvious was long since hammered and the main lot was essentially full which of course almost never happens on a Monday.
The good news is that I know of a few spots that nearly no one else knows about. I tried out skiing one run on the front side to see if it had been passed over but it was also too cut up to ski well. Then hitting a alternating deep and chopped IP lift line on my way to the backside. 6 untracked runs in unnamed locations later I stopped for a quick bite to eat for all of about 10 minutes before switching to the well marked stuff for 4 runs since it's my first day on the steeps at Eldora this year. I then managed to hit 2 more runs back in my own now semi-tracked locations before they shut Corona lift down for the day a touch after 3pm. At which point I hit one final run on the front side in Powderhorn glade. A pretty sweet ski day for Eldora. Many shots that are only skiable every 4-5 years are now open and coverage is excellent basically everywhere.
