Finally, the first true spring skiing since January!
Oh that spring corn is so very very nice, plus we got to sleep in, too!
After starting off with some early groomers on the front side, the East facing aspects of the Back Bowls turned soft and smooth. As the day wore on, we followed the sun around the bowls.
Vail has gone bonkers on the grooming this year, running the cats down numerous back bowl pitches, Saturday down into Teacup bowl, and Yonder, under backbowl Chair 17, in addition to a swath or two in China Bowl. Also groomed was Blue Ox off Chair 10, an awesome west-facing afternoon blast. They left the slopes under backbowl Chair five alone, and I found myself strangely disappointed. The coverage is great this year, only a few sketchy areas right at the base of the backbowl lifts
I'm especially appreciating the groomers this year since I got booted off the bumps after tearing my ACL on Goshawk at BC at the end of Feb, which will get patched up in a couple of weeks. Don't tell my doc that I skiied seven days after tearing it. (but hey, that's half of what I would've skiied! I wonder if that'll buy me any leniency).
Beaver Creek on Sunday dawned warm and not-so-sunny, but the slopes softened up nicely again. We started on East-facing Strawberry Park, groomed and soft corn, with nasty slush on the last few turns. Up on top, Golden Eagle was groomed but firm and technically challenging.
Down at Red Tail Camp we lounged in the warm spring sun, just outside the "no outside alcohol" sign with our outside wine, where the band was set up and jamming.
Huh?
What?
No I wasn't asleep, really!
Let's go wrap up the season!
While the soft bumps looked fabulous under the west-facing (former) Westfall lift, 3 or 4 laps on Harrier wrapped up a .....well pretty good... season, after all.
skating down the cat-track to the base, the snow became browner and heavier, and finally melded into mud and puddles, ending the season for me on a good note.
Vail is open until the 17th, while BC silences the bullwheels on the 10th.
