3rd trip to the wasatch in as many years for 9 days each. the last two were in january, this one, well, now. the differences from the jan trips and now is that now the mountains are redonkulously empty and it is a full on face shot pukefest out there.
ok, for the record, the skiing here is far better than what i'd be skiing at home right now, no delusions here. got up to brighton at the crack of 6:30am to a full on blizzard. called admin to see where he was at to find out he was still catching some z's. figured he'd hit the bird bounty and from reading his report, he made a fine choice as alta especially must've been crosseyed freakout good.
onward and upward breaking trail in 5 inches of new on top of the 7 inches from yesterday in an inch an hour late april snowstorm. craig, lea, and i hit the top of milli to take off the skins and add layers for the traverse out to the milli back bowl area. the traverse went well as we poked and prodded our way in a fairly careful spaced apart fashion towards our 1st run to see how the skiing was. now, one huge bonus to touring this time of year is that most slopes are smooth from lack of skier traffic and when you throw a foot+ of new on top, it's hard to not have a good ole time. there were plenty of areas to avoid such as chutes, couloirs, slopes with rocky or heavily treed areas above due to the fact that many of those types of runs had frozen chunks from warm day rollerball action or point releases. we knew where the smooth areas would be so not one of us hit one chunk or rut the whole time out. the skiing? frig me! all i can say is WOW! every friggin turn of every run of our 38 degree wide open plenty long shot was a complete explosion of dip, dive, load, unload, pop, explode, and bring it all back together for the next one. face shots galore. after a bunch of laps we traversed back to brighton for another deep untracked run back down to the car. done by noon, saw no other folks at all, unreal. spent all afternoon chillin, hot tubbing, eating thai food and being a gentleman O
. don't ask. :-$
tomorrow? earlier start, skinning by 6am and probably same area but gettin a bit higher. i'm liking this time of year in the wasatch, i like it alot. another time marc. look forward to it.
