Sunday, I went back in Lanaudiere to try Mont Garceau. It was really different of saturday at La Reserve, as Garceau is a family resort and la Reserve is an extreme ski resort. Big contrast, when you think the 2 resorts are just separated by 5 miles. There was more skiers at Garceau and the conditions were more icy, in general. At the end of the day, most of the groomed trails were icy and there was a trail, open, according to the website, that was closed in reality (I really hate that). At least, the lower part of the main glade of the resort was open, even if it was closed on the website.... this last one was interesting and really less icy than the groomed trails. (photo) I took few times a very long and enough difficult off-trail, but there was thin cover, rocks and lot of grass, then it wasn't super interesting.

Today, I went to Mont Shefford, in the Townships. This is like a little Mad River Glen. In fact, for the 1000' of vertical drop, there is just 3 t-bars. The trails are narrow and generally full of powder. There is nice glades and really interesting spots out of the trails. Unfortunately, the resort, that just reopened on dec 26, after have been closed last year, seriously miss snow, on the lower part of the mountain. Almost all the terrain was open, but with a real thin cover and many rocks, on the lower mountain. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed my day, as the upper mountain had nice snow, with even a 8'' of powder, in the almost untracked glades. (photo) I even tried some crazy lines, in a huge space between 2 trails. There I found a natural gladed bowl that just needs a little day with a chain saw to become a wonderful glade and farther, there was a big wall of about 50 degrees with almost no cliffs. It was incredible to ski that gem !

A 1,000-footer in the Townships that I'm not familiar with?? Is that also known as Mont-Glen?

No, it's 2 different ski areas. Mont Glen is a 1100' vertical near Knowlton, then ± between Bromont and Sutton. Shefford is on north of Bromont, on the north side of Highway 10. In fact, it's the mountain just in front of Bromont, but the ski area is on the north side, then you can't see it from Bromont, but we can see Bromont from Shefford. It's a very familial ski area and more of the families who go there don't know that there is some really nice glades, tree skiing and nice twisty narrow trails, on the upper mountain.

When there is big snow and crowds in the ski areas, it's one of the best places to go (with la Reserve and Alta(Qc) ) as the place never have big crowds and the powder really stays a long time in the glades. For example, they didn't get snow since at least 2 weeks ... and there was 8 inches of powder in the official glades ! The only thing a little bit tough is the t-bars of the area, but after few runs, it become less worst.
www.montshefford.com (with intro with "Cold Fusion" pics lol)

here is the trail map

Dang! I never even knew that was there. That's one really broken website, though.

Maybe I'll buzz over to have a peek when I'm in the Townships next week.
