Gore Mountain - 2/16 and 2/17

Sorry for the late post on this one, I pretty much shut my life down last week with the storm as I know some of you did and have been picking up the pieces the last 3 days or so!

The plan was simple, have the fiancee call in sick to work and leave Ithaca at about 6 AM to head up to Gore on Friday to ski the 38 inches of snow they had. I had joked earlier in the year that the only way we were going to take another ski trip was if somewhere got 4 feet of snow, and I got my wish.

The drive up was absolutely horrible courtesy of the Lake Ontario snow band settling on the I81 and I90 area. People were off all over the place, and then all of a sudden we broke into blue skies and sunshine about 10 miles east of Utica. Nevertheless, the drive up took about an hour longer than it should have, and probably would have taken longer without our Silverado.

We got to Gore around 10:30 AM and were still able to park in one of the closer parking lots. It was clear the place wasn't overly crowded. We headed in, got our lift tickets, got our gear on and were out on the trails by about 11:30 AM. We started with a blue run on Fox Lair as a warm up under the gondola. Things were somewhat choppy with some very badly wind blown areas (the wind was really going in areas of the mountain with western exposure), but overall things looked pretty good. We quickly decided to get off the main trails and start exploring. We skied Cave Glades which was only opened last year, and this may have been the first time they were able to open it at all. It was a great shot with a lot of fresh untracked snow in it. Very narrow gladed area, with lots of interesting variability in pitch and what not. We just took our time, and had a lot of fun. We were not able to find the "cave" that you can ski through anywhere though.

Further runs that day included a lot of moguls up top in the Straight Brook area including The Rumor. The skier's left side of the headwall was blown off, but you could still edge into it. Otherwise, the trail was just 3 to 5 foot tall bump after bump of great natural snow. Straightbrook Glade was in good shape, but wasn't anywhere near as fresh due to easier access. We wrapped up the day with a run on Twister which wasn't groomed (it was great hearing the more everyday skiers complain about Gore not grooming out some of the blue trails).

The next day we headed out from Saratoga where we were staying at about 7 AM. We wanted to get to Gore around 8:15 AM or so. We ended up parked at about the same place we did the previous day (bad sign) and I ended up stuck on line for a lift ticket for about 30 minutes since I used a recipricol season pass discount and they wouldn't sell me a two day ticket on Friday (it wasn't eligible for the holiday). Once we got skiing around 9:30 AM though, things quickly looked up. Blue trails were completely clogged up and there were definite choke points on the mountain. Nevertheless, we never waited longer than maybe 5 minutes in a lift line anywhere. We skied the Twister glades early in the day while you could still find untracked and had a great time skiing the liftline glade under the triple. The other liftlines were open, but did have some bare patches and a lot of drops, so we decided to give them a pass due to generally being worn out.

Lies was in incredible shape other than for a bit of ice at the top, and Upper Steilhang (another one of their double black trails) was an absolute blast (we finished up the day with it). Riding up the North Quad we talked to a massive burly guy on 194 Stormriders who seemed to be a regular. He told us Gore broke their record for skier attendance that day. I'd believe it, since cars were actually parked all the way down the access road to Peaceful Valley Rd. The incredible thing is that the mountain never felt that crazy, other than when we had to get lunch.

Overall, absolutely great day. I think I've heard people mention that Gore has inbound terrain as hairball as anything in northern VT, it's just rare that they have the snow for it. Well, they actually had the snow for once, and it was great. If any of you have ever thought about skiing there and haven't checked the place out, this would be the time to do it, especially if they get a bit more fresh snow (with the current bit of thaw and freezing going on).

Was the guy on the Stormriders wearing funky glacier glasses, from Hadley named Miles? I always see him there.

Upper Steilhang is a blue trail off of Cloud (from the Summit). Lower Steilhang is a narrow black diamond with a steep sharp curve.

Did they give you the 30% discount with your GP seasons pass? or was it blacked out for the holiday? Did you stay at the Black Mtn Inn?

Gore is a great mountain. I'm going up there next week. We decided to wait out the holiday week so we can use the discounted lift tix. I have some vouchers I bought from Price Chopper that are good sun-friday and were blacked out through the 25th. I hope there will be more snow by the time we get there, now that there's a decent base in the woods.

We did both Upper Steilhang and Lower Steilhang, and you are indeed correct, that was a mix up on my part while knocking out that report earlier before leaving for work. Both Upper and Lower were in great shape, and Lower was really a great trail with the narrow sections, big bumps, and lots of variable pitch.

I think the guy may have been Miles, we didn't catch where he was from, but he was wearing glacier glasses I believe. Is this guy well over 6 feet tall and of rather dark complexion with a bit of an accent?

I was able to get 30% off on Friday, but it was blacked out for the weekend due to the holiday. My fiancee doesn't have a pass, and they would only issue me one discount ticket, so we just got her a two day instead. In the end, we both spent only about $50 to $55 to ski there per day, which is a steal when you consider a lot of VT resorts at about $75 a ticket now.

It looks like they should get at least a few fresh inches of snow the end of this week. We just have to hold our breath now and see what this storm going up the midwest at the tail end of the weekend does. Even if it gets warm 12 hours, if it isn't that wet hopefully things won't get too screwey. There's still a chance places will get mainly snow with some sleet at the end, that's what I'm hoping for now. I'm going to be back on the road next week and plan on hitting Mount Snow to use up vouchers enroute to MA and then probably going to be up at Sugarloaf to kill off vouchers from my Killington day that got nailed.

I was also at gore on Saturday and it was the most crowded I have ever seen it but the mounatin, especially at top wasn't bad at all. How did you make the drive from Ithaca, did you take route 8 at utica?

Yep, on the way up we took route 8 from Utica. Way back we took 365 into Rome instead to shave off a few miles (since the roads were in much better shape then). Drive back taking 365 non-stop only took a touch over 3 hours I think.

You think taking 365 all the way to Rome is faster than getting back on i-90 at Utica. I debated it but haven't taken that way, whats the speed limit like on 365?

365 is much more direct and much faster than going all the way to Utica. I've gone both ways.

CW, there is no way you drove that 200 miles in 3 hours. I've done it dozens of times and the best time I've gotten from Ithaca to Gore is 3 hr 30 min and that was haulin no stops. A normal drive incl one 10 min stop for gas at the SaveOn on 365 will take me just less than 4 hours.

Sharon,

I didn't check my time exactly, but it was definitely 3:30 at most, and it may have been more like 3:15 or so. For the record, we were moving at very much extra-legal speeds for a good bit of the run  . Back when I had my Acura TL I once made it from North Syracuse back to Ithaca in about 45 minutes. I should have gone to prison though.

I'd be a bit worried about Greek this weekend overall. We got a lot more wet than white today than I was hoping for, and it's supposed to freeze up pretty hard tonight. Conditions will probably be okay, but midwinter packed powder is going to be over, at least until we get some fresh snow. I was going to head out tomorrow morning, but think I'm going to pass since I'm quite busy...

CW,

I was up at Gore all last week including the two days you reported on, and it was a great time to be at Gore. We also had trouble getting to our place as our plow guys was overwhelmed and walking the 500 feet to our camp from the road in waist high took 20 minutes the first time. Also power outages lead to plumbing issues.

Saturday 2/17 was the first time I can remember the mountain turning people away because of lack of parking, and still I never felt remotely close to crowded ever. When the mountain is all open there is so much terrain.

I got to the mountain at 7:30 both days, as Gore will many times open the Gondi as much as 40 minutes before opening. I parked right next to the Sunway chair to make ski changes easy.

The skiing was killer. I'm basically a highly motivated intermediate who is just learning bumps and had never really been in the trees much, except one time when a ski patroller took me into the Tahawus Glades after a dump 5 years ago. Over the next two days I hit Straightbrook, Chati, Mineshaft, Darby Woods, Twister, Tahawas,- basically everything except the Cave and the Dark Side which are now the only places on the map I haven't been. (Never been off the map except for a Gore to Garnet BC ski.) I added Upper Darby to my list. I spent most of my time on Lower Steilhang and the High Pines "Glades" that have to have become my favorite. I was basically teaching myself to do bumps and trees on some pretty narrow 180s (Atomic TM22s - 107-72-90) and lovin it. Each day as the bumps got deeper, especially on High Pines it got a bit tougher but I skied it everyday until this past Friday 2/23. The whole thing was an awesome experience.

My wife was awesome - skiing Chatimac over and over while I was ducking into the SB Glades. Thursday (2/21) we got another 3-4 inches that freshened thing up and got me back in the trees.

I'm headed back up as soon as I can get there.

Great weekend at Greek Peak. I'm ready to head to Gore next weekend. Maybe some new snow on top of that deep base would be nice.

All this talk of great skiing is getting me depressed. I had to take the weekend off to try to push through getting things ready for my ultra long weekend coming up (heading to MA/NH for more wedding planning and some skiing). Only thing keeping me from losing it is knowing I'll be at Mount Snow on Thursday, and somewhere I can use my ASC vouchers on Monday.

Anyone ever ski Attitash? We're going to need to drive a bunch extra for Sunday River or Sugarloaf. I haven't heard much about it (and looking around, there is a bunch of complaining about it), so I'm thinking the extra drive may be in order to get up to Bethel at least (we'll be in Wolfeboro, NH the night before).

Never been to what is known as "Someday Bigger" but I have been to The Loaf and it is well worth the drive (but yeah...it is a bit of a haul, as is just about anywhere in Maine from Ithaca).

I actually skied Sunday River back three years ago when I was first getting serious with skiing (was pretty much an intermediate, blue trail skier at that point). It was a lot of fun back then, and my fiancee really likes the place (it was her family's ski destination most of the time from northeast Massachusetts).

Sugarloaf is going to be about an extra 80 miles of driving for us over Sunday River, and timing is going to be pretty tight, so unless conditions seem to warrant it (back bowls open?), we're probably just going to do Sunday River for the day. I know what you mean about it being a haul from Ithaca though. Without the fiancee's family in northeast MA and central NH, it'd be tough to justify going all the way into Maine from here with VT so much closer.

Attitash is the bigger curiosity since it could save us a bunch of driving, but from reading around it sounds like the lift/trail setup isn't conducive to really enjoying all the terrain at the place easily.
