Greek Peak Jan 24

Family trip to Greek Peak Sat.Jan 24.
Had to be in Rochester on Friday, so we figured we would ski our way home to Jersey over the weekend.

It was a cold day at Greek Peak with a bit of wind.
Most trails were well covered but got a bit scratchy in the middle past mid day.
The edges stayed nice.
Skiied most trails worth skiing.
Olympian was ice between minor bumps. and not worth more than 1 run.
Odyssey, Illiad and Alcmene had nice snow and skied well.
Elysian Fields would have been alot better skiing without the wind.
The bumps on skiers right were nice though.
Getting back to the lift from this trail was brutal stop-you-in-your-tracks headwind that didn't seem worth the effort.
So with the wind building we went to the trees.
Aesop's glade and Alsos Glade were both marked thin and bare but the designation only held for some very small sections that were avoidable. These were the best skiing of the day. The snow wasn't fantastic but the trails were fun.

The lifts at Greek Peak are a whole 'nother story.
There were no lift lines the entire day.
Lift 1a was running very slow. Took only two rides on it and were 11 and 15 minutes each for a 952 foot vertical climb.
Lift 1 was running a bit faster and we averaged around 11 minutes.
They tried to run lift 2 up to speed but it was constantly slowed or stopped on each ride up. We were stopped mid ride for 4 minutes on one ride.
Lift 5 was slow, but at least it didn't stop constantly.

The slopes were empty. I attribute this to the slow uphill transportation. Every run we did we had the trial to ourselves. That was nice, but we froze on the lift ride up. Now I'm not the fastest skiier in the world. I like to take my time. Look at the view. etc. So lift ride up taking more than twice as much as the down hill for me is really bad.

There was a big push to get people to check-out/buy slopside condos. I guess to add revenue to upgrade their lifts. I'm just not sure how places like Greek Peak are going to stay viable through this recession though. Sorry Sharon, I know this is home turf for you but for us, the cost for product was too high and we will probably not go back. The ticket cost was very much higher than Pocono areas and there was no Youth/student rate (< 18 years old). The added distance from home and added cost is just not worth it over the Pocono areas for this family. If you are close by, it's a lovely mountain.

With the exception of the management, no one deludes themselves about GP's viability as a destination resort. It ain't. It's a good place if you have it nearby as a home hill or can hit it on the way to other things. The best thing about GP is its (conditions permitting) lift-served tree skiing.

I only go there if I can get 2-for-1s or can take advantage of night skiing. $56 is a silly price for that place.

greek peak has retarded lift prices. i can only afford to ski there by getting a seasons pass in april (and yes i'm local) for cheap. 300$ is fine for a season when i usually make it about 20 times. if you go with someone with a pass you get 20% off btw. not a 2 for 1 but it's something. find someone with a pass in the lodge.

they have excellent tree skiing, best in the area for sure. most of the woods have been thinned out at one point or another, so go exploring and go far. they're also still close enough to lake ontario to get the snow. other places like GORE have great tree skiing, but get less snow. greek on a good day with 12" of freshies is actually worth the 56$, and you don't need a real storm to get it... just wind

pulled it out of my ass where else? i was really trying to mention the lake effect i guess, and the potential for big random dumps during a dry spell, not just this year's half season totals. got a little carried away with a generalization
sorry for the mis information. maybe i'm just dead wrong in the first place. maybe i've just driven down rt 8 to many times on the wrong days only to leave all the snow back home. post a ten year history and really put me in my place if you're going to post that many totals
