hit up haystack for MA Residents $29 deal. it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. <BR> <BR>the rain took a brutal toll on haystack. first runs in the AM saw chunks, shards, cookies, and rocks of ice covering a layer of hard pack on most trails. this was far better than trails that didn't receive grooming (gandolf) which was unskiable (except for the rope ducking nuts that decided to click out of their skis and walk down). <BR> <BR>wind was BLOWING hard in the AM. lots of complaining, but it really wasn't THAT bad. wind actually forced the witches triple to close, and with good reason! when riding up, the chair i was on was swinging dangerously close to the lift towers. witches would reopen later. <BR> <BR>i decided to stick to the popular trails for once, instead of searching out places less skied hoping for high skier traffic smoothing out the terrain. it worked, kinda. the main routes down started to even out a bit, and lots of fun was to be had directly under the hayfever triple. <BR> <BR>forgive me for not knowing some trail names. the steap black at the top of the barnstormer triple was excellent. oh no, under the old double, was top to bottom the worst and most brutal trail on the hill. the shot in between those two trails almost took that record for unbreakable crusty hard pack, but every once in a while you actually found powder, so it was redeemed. <BR> <BR>the short narrow diamond halfway down skier's right of the barnstormer triple was SWEET. no ice shards or nothing, just good snow. Wizard off the witches was also SWEET by PM. i had A TON of fun trying to break up the hard pack bumps on merlin. yikes, form was poor but what ever. hehe, i had a smile on my face which in the AM, never thought that would happen. <BR> <BR>hopefully the groomers will get another shot to even things out on the sketchy trails. i don't think the bad snow was their fault though, you can only do so much when grooming non-breakable frozen crust. especially, when said mountain is the unwanted bastard child of the evil empire and doesn't even open/operate during the week
