Heading to UT tomorrow, anyone skiing Th/F?

I have perhaps my last chance for a while to take time off work, so I'm headed to Utah tomorrow. I'll probably sleep for a few hours in whatever random rest stop looks most inviting and then make it to Alta in the morning. I don't know the mountain very well, so anyone want to play tour guide?

Also, what are opinions on cheap hotel vs. AirBnB? I haven't found a really cheap hotel that gets decent ratings yet, but there are so many perhaps I've skipped over one.

Your timing is good although I don't expect any gated terrain to open before Saturday, and with the pent up demand in this town I expect Saturday to be a total junk show if the predicted 16-30" comes to fruition. In all likelihood I won't be up until Saturday. Maybe a couple of hours on Friday but I won't know until then. Cheap hotels? No clue.

How cheap? I've done OK at the courtyard Marriott and Hilton garden inn in Sandy. Maybe a hostle style room at the Gold Miners daughter?

And I'm sure it'll be a crazy house. Our weekend of the 9th of January was similar and Alta was nuts with nothing open then again the wind was blowing really hard.

Making things worse I think is the fact that snow levels will be high so you can't escape to Ogden and I'd bet you get PC locals making the drive too. Could be worse, it could not snow.

A friend of a friend was in SLC for ski instructor training and stayed at the Camelot Inn and recommended it. It's closer to downtown and airport than ski areas, but is only $33 for a single room with bath. Some people have problems with self check-in and that reservations have to be made on-line. See http://www.ut123.com/CH.htm

I wouldn't - meaning there are a lot better places for not much more money.

Others in the past have recommended both the Crystal Inn and Marriott (?) Short Stay, both in Midvale and next to the I-215 East Belt.

Crystal Inn showed over $100 for tonight or next Thurs. Not sure if this is the "Stay" you mean, but last two reviews of this place for $75 are bad: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... _Utah.html

If you want really bad reviews, see this: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... _Utah.html

Compared to that flea and bed-bug haven over on 800 S, I'd gladly pay the $100+ for the Crystal.

Nope - that's the one on Auto Mall Drive over by I-15 off of 106th. The one I was thinking of is just north of I-215 (6200S ??)around 200E. I really can't remember the name.

Are you looking for a hotel, motel, or hostel?
I know nothing about any hostel, anywhere, as I've never stayed in one and likely never will. At least not in the US.
