I got in the moderate line for Gunbarrel about 8:50. It began loading about 8:55 which was five minutes before scheduled. I waited at the top for Brian, who I was supposed to be guiding with. We met a third person who was guiding for EpicSki gathering on the Powder Bowl chair, then went up Sky Chair and skied untracked powder in Milky Way Bowl. We went up Dipper and skied the sunnier side of Milky Way Bowl, into Dipper Trees for more untracked. The new snow was not as deep as previous days at Northstar and was wind-affected, but skied well. Heavenly reported 5-7.5 inches in previous 24 hours, 16-19.5” in last 48 and storm total of 22.5-42.5”. Tom, the third guide, had skinned above lifts that were closed due to wind previous day and said it skied much better. He even took a run on Thurs. down Raley’s Bowl, some of Heavenly’s side country that ends near gondola base. He said he had to take off his skis to cross one rocky place, but otherwise coverage was good.

We met up with others for EpicSki that had come up from Stagecoach base and took them down Milky Way Bowl. When we stopped to re-group, we waited a long time for others that had stayed in the trees and got past us. We were entertained by a guy moving at high speed out of the bowl who hit a two foot tall rock that was buried in the snow. Luckily he was un-injured, but did a double-eject and barrel roll in the air. Another person also uncovered a rock and crashed in front of us, but not nearly as hard. We lost more of our group as Phil continued past turn towards Dipper/Comet base. We went up Comet and found one person with our group, but he was waiting for others. After a few minutes we headed for woods between boundary and North Bowl. Snow was deep, untracked and good, but I was finding a lot of rocks. We made four more powder runs in the trees on North Bowl, twice turning left toward exit run from North Bowl and twice continuing under the chair. We were two of the very few that skied the powder where coverage was thin.

Going up Olympic, we saw Trish, another of our group and waited for her at the top. She is an instructor at Mt. Rose and was trying to help another lady in our group improve. We took them down the east-facing liftline from removed East Peak chair where snow was challenging. It was better on CA trail that we took to 1 pm meetup at Tamarack Lodge.

After lunch, we took out a group of 5 and went up Tamarack chair, down CA trail, into little known Maggie’s Canyon, where we found some sun-affected untracked. Then we went up and skied Advanced Roundabout into West Bowl, where there was winter snow in the shade on the left and almost corn in the sun on the right. Next we took the group down the left side of Gunbarrel and went past a line of advisory closed signs to avoid run where man-made snow had become icy. We skied Pistol, then I took visitors from MA, PA and WA down Lower Gunbarrel while Tom went back to West Bowl and got a core shot.

We too the visitor up to ski Waterfall, then higher where we all skied Milky Way Bowl before splitting up as we returned to CA, while others went to where they had parked in NV. We took an easier line into Maggie’s Canyon and one visitor downloaded Gunbarrel. We did another Advanced Roundabout into West Bowl nd had to listen to a boarder tell us “don’t do it” every time steep West Bowl crossed more gentle and heavily used Roundabout. I did not get back to the car until almost 4:30 and finished with 23.3K and one ski with some scratches that affected gliding and turning.

On Saturday, the EpicSki group was going to Kirkwood. We’d heard that Motts Canyon would probably open and I decided I rather ski Heavenly for free than burn a ticket and gas driving 35 miles to Kirkwood, where they are less able to handle expected crowd. At Gunbarrel at 8:20 (they open at 8:30 on weekend), I was close to front of smaller line than previous day, but had to wait at top for about 5 minutes for Tom who experienced delay picking up repaired skis. We took a warmup on Sky chair, then another on Liz’s, a run I has not skied this year that may not last long as multiple rock bands crossing it were already hard to cross unscathed. Next, we skied Milky Way, were I found an untracked line, but Tom and Sterling, who joined us for a few runs, did not find to their liking. We next did east-facing East Peak liftline, probably a little too early as some of it was firm.

Next time up, we split up into singles line to take Milky Way Bowl to Motts Canyon, arriving a minute or two after 10 am opening. While some traverses and entries were rocky, and the snow was heavy in places, it was untracked, knee-deep and as steep as Heavenly gets. First time down, there was no line on right side and we dropped Sterling, who went on left. We took it three more times, going further right to get untracked. Only gate 1-4 were open and we were getting tired of push to get from top of lift to gate that got us to good runs so we skied down and took Dipper up. I timed the line at 9 minutes between 11 and noon on busy Saturday. We skied down Bills which still had excellent snow, but was suffering from gapers who had wandered into Motts. A kid had fallen and lost a ski. It was too steep for me to hike it up to him so, in all his wisdom, took off other ski and started a slide for life down nearly 40 degree entrance. He continued to walk up and down without skis and poles as his dad told him run was too steep for them. It’s not like there were others available that were much easier.

Five runs down Motts was hurting Tom’s feet so he sat one out while Sandra, a friend of his from his Heavenly ski instructor days that we ran into after second Motts run and I took a cruiser. Then, Sandra went home and Tom and I took a too thin run above Sky Lake. We finished the day with three runs down the Face, where we found some sections of good snow. The day was warm enough that we dropped shells at car after first run. I finished at 3:15 with 23K vertical and an increasingly sore left hip after 7 days of hard skiing in a row. I also found a bruise at the top of my boot on my left leg to go with the one I got in a fall at Alpine at the top of my inside left calf.

How do you remember every run of every day? Seriously, do you take notes?

Well, he might be using the EpicPass info to fill in at least lift details...

Thanks for the report. We're there next week and it is excellent to hear of the conditions first hand. I'm amazed at your ability to get around the mountain.

I have a few questions...

- Is Raley's Bowl from Fire Break gate?

- "Woods between boundary and North Bowl"... On the trail map as Nevada Woods and "The Burn"? Or is there more?

- I didn't realize there was an old East Peak lift. Can you clarify which trails (or between which trails) this is? For east facing and near Olympic, I'm guessing it shows it as ~Ponderosa now?

- "I decided I rather ski Heavenly for free than burn a ticket and gas driving 35 miles to Kirkwood". I'm guessing you have a Heavenly pass. Isn't that good for Kirkwood. Oh, I see you said it was Saturday, and it's not good on saturday. Just checking, since I want to go to Kirkwood during the week.

- "Advanced Roundabout"????

- Finally, can you help clarify the best way to get into Maggie's Canyon is? It's not really clear on the trail map where it begins and ends and I've never seen any signage for it.

Thanks again,

Eric

Sunday made it eight days in a row for me and I was feeling it, but still made it out of the cabin about 8. I finally won something on the Tahoe TV show, after a few days trying, being first caller for a free tune-up at the Powder House, which I really need. I picked up the voucher and went by the shop, but they only do overnight tunes, not during the day like I needed. With the two stops, I still parked very close to the tram, but was not in time to make first tram and had to settle for the second one at a few minutes after nine. I went up to Sky and took two runs there. First was a fast run down what used to be Betty’s, but is called High Five this year. Next I took Ellie’s from Swing trail. I had not been on Ellie's this year and figured I better do it before they close it again. It was way too early for west-facing run that had frozen moguls and tracks from the warm previous afternoon. But Liz’s was already closed and the middle part Ellie’s will not be skiable for long. This may be a year that the wind-stripped top of Ellie’s never opens. I took two more groomers on Canyon chair, then one more from Sky, before heading for Nevada. Since I was skiing single, the small lines went fast for me.

I skied Milky Way Bowl, but passed on Motts, even though it is north-facing and steep enough that snow may still have been winter-like. My left hip was bothering me enough to want to avoid steep hop turns that may have been needed. I took one run on Dipper, then thought about one on steep and bumpy Comet run, before heading lower where I skied the Downhill into Nevada Trail, then went up slow North Bowl to Olympic chair. I skied the entire Downhill to Stagecoach, then went up Olympic again and skied soft east-facing to Dipper. I skied CA trail and tried the right option that heads towards Maggie’s Canyon, then followed a trail that was about to burn throug to base of Sky Chair. I made one more run from the top, first on High Five, the cutting across to the bottom of Ridge Run. I enjoyed near winter-like snow on the very narrow shaded area between trees and private mogul course on Waterfall, one of my favorite spots. After going up Groove and through entrance above top of Gunbarrel chair, where I laid down some powder tracks, I skied down to the car. I quit before 12:30 and my watch counted 19 runs and 21.4K vertical. In the eight days I skied over 180K vertical and had 6 powder days as only on the first and last days, did I not ski a lot of new snow.

I’m trying to answer some previous questions and have not used quote function and don’t want to start learning how with quotes from multiple people. I also usually use Word to prepare my report, then cut and paste as I’ve lost long reports in the past and don’t like re-typing them.

Note that conditions changed fast from powder to spring as it was 52 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, 56 and Sunday and 58 was predicted for Monday. With the freeze from storm predicted on Tuesday, almost everything will get very firm. And even though Heavenly claimed up to 3 1/2 feet of snow from last week's storm, that was in a wind-protected area. A lot of places on the mountain got stripped.

From socal “How do you remember every run of every day? Seriously, do you take notes?”

From ericmorton “he might be using the EpicPass”

I don’t take notes and did not have access to EpicMix until Sunday evening, but I am running SkiTracks on my iPhone that tracks all runs for the day (if I turn it on - I did not on Sunday). You can replay your day on a map or get chart of speed and altitude vs. time. It’s a great app for 99 cents, but not available for all phones. I don’t think I referred to SkiTracks for this day and do my best from memory, sometimes I skip a run or get things wrong, but it's only the Internet.

I really don’t always do run by run as I often summarize like 3 untracked runs down Motts. I think we did untracked Bernie’s, then over (very) Rocky Point to where a sign said something like Sadies’s Saddle, where run was shorter, but also steep and untracked. Then we traversed lower (heat in lift line and hike to get back to gate and stay high was wearing us out) to get to Hemlock, then again to Sadie’s Saddle so maybe I really probably had 4 Motts runs with a lot of powder. Pictures were taken on tracked out Bills.

From ericmorton
- Is Raley's Bowl from Fire Break gate? No. I’ve seen it from below, never done it, but Tom said they skinned from top of beginner’s area behind top of Tram. I’ve done Firebreak.

- "Woods between boundary and North Bowl"... On the trail map as Nevada Woods and "The Burn"? Or is there more? We did one into the other although most of the The Burn was too thin from being exposed to the sun. I doubt they are now skiable although the rocks would be easier to spot

- I didn't realize there was an old East Peak lift. Can you clarify which trails (or between which trails) this is? For east facing and near Olympic, I'm guessing it shows it as ~Ponderosa now? East Peak chair ran from bottom of Comet to top of Olympic. It starts on Ponderosa, but there is really a lot more east-facing terrain there.

- "I decided I rather ski Heavenly for free than burn a ticket and gas driving 35 miles to Kirkwood". I'm guessing you have a Heavenly pass. Correct. Tahoe Value pass is blacked out Sat. at both Northstar and Kirkwood until further notice. They may give us last weekend or two as they did when I had 6-Wood. It seems like there was a lot of confusion about that. You also need to wait in ticket line at Kirkwood where they scan your pass before giving you a day pass.

- "Advanced Roundabout"???? Advanced Roundabout is found by taking the Groove chair and making a 270 degree right turn. Patsy’s chair does not get you high enough. There is a gate above the terrain park and one inside the terrain park, but they were both closed by Sunday as a lot of it faces West and SW and cannot stand up to traffic without a better snowpack. It saves the hike required on Roundabout and the sometimes icy, bumpy top of The Face. It also gets you to a part of West Bowl below always rocky Hogsback.

- Finally, can you help clarify the best way to get into Maggie's Canyon is? It's not really clear on the trail map where it begins and ends and I've never seen any signage for it. Hard question. Probably more than half of the people skiing Heavenly do not know there is a Maggie’s Canyon. It’s entered by dropping off road part of CA trail. Tom and the group dropped off way earlier than I did, but found mostly sun-baked snow. I usually drop off just before road turns to the left. There were caution sign there over weekend. Maggie’s Canyon faces West so the right side faces SW and the left side NW. The left side is shaded by big trees so it almost always can at least be traversed. The bottom of the canyon and right-side can be fun if there is a lot of snow. In a good year, there is an entrance where the road part of CA trail starts, right where CA trail turns from going NW/W to S/SE

I miss the East Peak chair, though terrain directly under it was south facing. From base of Dipper you rode that up, then had a nice fall line run down Olympic. They took it out when they built Comet. From Comet, Dipper or Tamarack you now have to use the long and tedious Crossover catwalk to reach either Nevada base. Must be especially fun for snowboarders. When Heavenly put in the gondola from Stateline, they had a chance to correct this problem by running a short chair from there to top of Olympic but chose to put in only a beginner chair covering half the distance. If they needed more beginner terrain (which I agree they did) a second lift or a mid-station would have still solved both problems.

Reading between the lines it's evident to me that Heavenly is still low tide, the Mott opening was marginal (I'm very surprised it happened at all), and that it remains a less than desirable choice for Tahoe skiers who want to ski other than groomers this season.
