Heavenly, CA and NV 3/24/2014

Three hike day at Heavenly. My son and I left San Jose after 6 am and we arrived Sierra-Tahoe by 10 am. He skied there on a free ticket while I continued to Heavenly, not getting on the tram until after 11 am. I warmed up on Ridge Run into Ridge Bowl before moving to Nevada where I found some good almost winter snow on NE facing part of Milky Way Bowl. Then, I skied Dipper Bowl and Jacks and went up Comet chair. After asking Olympic lift op about North Bowl went up chair and skied into North Bowl from way left of rope line. I found good snow and nobody in it (as it was probably closed). My luck on catching shuttles from closed mid-week Boulder Base to Stagecoach did not hold as driver told me I had a 20 minute wait so I sat at closed Boulder Lodge in plastic Adirondack and had sandwich and beer from my pocket while watching small group play in pile of snow.

I went up Stagecoach and Olympic and skied east-facing to Dipper chair. At the top I talked to ski patrol about gates open into Killibrew and took gate C into Bob's Boulevard which was good, but steeper and higher Stateline Chute looked better. Exiting Killibrew, I had to take off skis for at least 200 yards to get around corner to get back on snow, then later for about 50 feet to cross two dirt patches. The rest of the exit had some challenges, but was skiable and well-covered. I did another lap and got into Stateline Chute from gate B, my hardest run this year at Heavenly as it is very steep, with a difficult entrance, but snow was best and most winter-like I found all day.

After two hikes to get out of Killibrew, I was very warm and took off my shell and helmet for the lift ride. I skied CA trail to Sky chair where I took a late afternoon, into the sun, run down Ellies, which still was firm and fun and had no more rocks showing than previous week. I went up Sky again and for the first time this year hiked uphill into a gap I know before Monument Peak where I found some challenging almost untracked, but spring-affected snow above Milky Way Bowl. By this time my son was on free bus to SLT from Sierra so I went up Dipper again and skied CA trail to Maggie's Canyon and came down the Face which was bumpy, very thin and too firm in spots, challenging, but better than riding a lift down. Quit after 3:30 PM with over 20K.

Good for you for still getting after it. Puts snow snobbery in serious perspective. No excuse for anyone not getting out there (including myself).
