Our plans changed so that instead of skiing before going to and on way to Benton Hot Springs to celebrate friend’s birthday over the weekend and see part of CA I’d never been to, we drove back to and stayed at So. Tahoe cabin Sunday night and I skied Heavenly. Wind kept Sky chair, gondola and upper NV lifts closed. Since it was garbage day and weather did not look promising with wind and overcast, after taking dog around the block, I swept and raked accumulated pine needles off driveway before getting ready to ski. Lucia thought about going, then decided against. I parked very close to tram at CA base that I loaded at 1040. There was not an overnight freeze at Lake level and a little mist fell early and again when I quit.
After finding some slow snow on SE facing Patsy’s and more on route to Canyon, the highest CA chair running, I rode groomers there 4x. Best and only advanced groomed run was short Ridge Bowl. Canyon line was moderate with unmanaged singles line worse. I thought line had gone down, but after taken a run down Upper Mombo and coming back up Powder Bowl chair to Canyon, I found longer line. Besides Mombo, I skied Powder Bowl run on namesake chair once and more challenging Waterfall twice. I took a lot of photos of always amazing and changing Lakeviews from Heavenly. First is on Powder Bowl. Next is from top of Waterfall.
View from top of Tram and near top of Gunbarrel chair.
Then I moved to lowest CA level, skiing Advanced Roundabout where patroller was shoveling snow onto nearly bare S-facing corner. N-facing groomed chute a little lower skied well, then I went off corner into confined Pistol and skied lower Gunbarrel where bumps were still firm especially on more shaded left side. I went up namesake chair and skied Gunbarrel once, then East Bowl before returning to my SUV and dropping too-heavy jacket after my 3 laps on lowest level. I did 5 more lowest CA level laps wearing only a long-sleeved T-shirt and short-sleeved base layer, carrying water bottle and some snacks in pants pockets. I alternated Gunbarrel and East Bowl and once skied Patsy’s then rode Groove chair to get to Hogbacks entrance where I skied soft West Face part of Hogsback into Pistol and lower Gunbarrel. I quit about 240 with just over 20K and a near nonstop East Bowl.
Tethered very young snowboard skiing East Bowl. He went down a few times, but seemed to be having fun. Also have short video.
As many people as I ever saw skiing middle Gunbarrel this day.
Entrance to Hogsback and some of the terrain in West Face part of Hogsback. Nevada Beach that we walk our dog to at far right.
Mid and Upper CA from top of Gunbarrel. Waterfall in middle and Sky liftline disappears into cloud above and slightly to left of it.
Somewhat cluttered Ski Tracks of upper/middle and lower mountain lifts I rode and runs I skied.
My nephew who is a first-year instructor at Heavenly (he has worked very limited days) let us know one of his roomates is waiting tables at Brew Brothers at Harrah’s that will open later this week. They had a mock service with a free cocktail, appetizer, main and dessert to share. Great drinks, food and services for only a generous tip. My wife’s salmon was excellent and my fish tacos were loaded with very good fish. We had a blueberry pie a la mode for dessert. I had a Mango Margarita.
