The update to our Grocery Outlet stop was that they charged me for two bottles of a Paso Robles Merlot when I only bought one so I called and they said I could come back on Wed and get my money back or another bottle. I got another bottle and Lucia bought four more dark chocolate bars. I wish that was my only stop, but one of the two times I separated from skiing with Lucia (first was Milky Way Bowl when we moved from CA to NV after skiing Sky chair), the thick plastic plate on top of one of my ski brakes brook off when removing skis to hike to corner exiting from Killibrew Canyon. Luckily I was able to get back into ski although one side of brake was flopping and neither side looked functional.
So before leaving SLT, I had to return to Pyramid Peak ski shop where owner always takes great care of me. On Tuesday, I picked up my 10 year-old powder skis after he had put in a huge base weld to repair damage from last Wed at Kirkwood and he replaced 2 or 3 other base welds that he thought could fail. And he included a tune-up for $50 total and had them ready Tuesday PM vs. Wednesday when I told him I'd pick them up (he’s having almost dead week for rentals). He also got Lucia into Volkl Kenjas that were on consignment for $250. He’d told me he could probably get owner to do $200. After he talked her into the skis, same size, which I think are 2-3” short for her, but much firmer than what she's been skiing, I asked if he needed to call owner and he said he’d just forego his commission. I gave him $20 for doing that and Lucia gave him $20 for finding and replacing broken brake that he wasn’t going to charge me for.
We drove the 1.1 mile from cabin to Heavenly tram, parking within 100’ of where Lucia would exit after downloading and not much further from where I’d end my skiing. We had short wait for people whose pass or pass on phone had problems before what was probably second tram on the day started moving at 915. We went to Sky chair and skied Ridge into groomed again Ridge Bowl, then Canyonland, then High Five on next two runs. Photos from Ridge Run with her new skis and one with me.
Next one was taken from a little lower on Ridge Run. Mt Rose in background to right and closer at far right is Genoa Peak.
Panoramic taken from the same place. Does any other Lakeview compare?
All were excellent groomers with some untouched corduroy and Lucia liked that new-to-her skis were much more positive and less flappy than only other pair she has that she would use. Even though bindings on K2s were checked and Phillips head screw that failed leading to her head injury replaced with a bigger one that would be regularly checked, she does not trust them. The best news is that new skis mean she is planning to ski next season, something she was not sure about early this Winter.
I skied the more E-facing part of Milky Way Bowl and it would have been better if it had been more skied or had more days to firm up into good corn as it was a little too soft/uneven. The N-facing part of Bowl probably also needed more packing or corning and would likely have been too firm that early. We met up at bottom and rode Dipper chair skiing Big Dipper run (she’d skied part of it entering NV) from the top. I went left into Dipper Bowl where bumps were still a little firm and challenging. Next time up we separated as I planned to ride Mott Canyon twice while she stayed on Dipper.
Patroller we’d rode Sky chair with earlier said he’d gone into Killibrew to check ropeline earlier and that it was good but going fast. I traversed across Milky Way Bowl into Gate A and skied some of Outer Limits, then cut into and skied challenging Pipeline,
Looking up, then down Pipeline from the same spot. I traversed to lookers right not much below where photos were taken.
before traversing and skiing what used to be called The Meadows and catching edge of Boundary Chutes. I exited high enough to get better exit that required a short walk to corner where skis could be put back on. There were a couple of places burned off on my route that I got around, but eventually I had to drop down to lowest exit from Killibrew. I did not have to do any walking or even step-ups to get to Mott chair. Since Killibrew had taken so long and I had a questionable brake, I returned to Dipper where Lucia was waiting.
Above is some of the Meadows and below is some of Boundary Chutes I skied. Still firm enough, especially in the shade, that I had to be careful in there alone.
Looking back at Boundary Chutes and Pipeline (entry is under blue arrow) from corner where I put my skis back on.
We planned to return to CA, but Lucia dropped a glove liner (thanks to guys behind us who noticed and yelled to us about it) so we had to repeat Big Dipper with me exiting far enough left to get to her liner near where I also picked up an empty Gatorade bottle and cap dropped chair. From there, I came down very lightly skied Jack’s. After riding Dipper and skiing a little, we stopped for photos at the top of CA trail, exchanging phones for photos and talking with snowboarding and his son visiting from Crested Butte. They were enjoying the soft Spring snow, something they say is rare in CO before closure. I should have led him down CA trail as I hope he did not try to ski too-rocky SW-facing trees above CA trail.
Lucia and I rode Sky chair and skied Ridge Run to Upper Mombo where SW-facing was surprising not sticky. At top of Groove (should have taken Patsy’s chair to avoid bad memories of her crash there three years ago), she skied to and missed a tram due to having to avoid a large puddle at entrance while carrying my light jacket so I could ski Face and East Bowl in only a thin base layer and T-shirt. Snow was very good under the Tram although bushes were starting to show in places. At least 2/3 of smoothly groomed World Cup run (named after chair that is never open to public (
Vail
) at bottom was roped off for snowcats that were making walls for upcoming pond skim. I quit before 1 with just over 15K. Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar all close on 4/20 and I’ve email CEO twice to complain about not having at least one more weekend at Kirkwood so they don’t close on Easter. I’m trying to go back 4/17-19. Even though Lucia enjoyed the short day at Heavenly with new-to-her skis more than previous day at Kirkwood, I will not be getting Lucia a Vail Tahoe Value Pass next season. She’s barely broken even too many seasons, with us having to scramble to get her days in April and this year will not have enough use to justify. I may buy her and our son a 1-day Tahoe Vail pass that pass office said is $91 for non-Holiday. And she can ski non-holiday at Mammoth and Palisades and 5 days at Sierra Tahoe.
