Having spent the better part of my youth at Mammoth Mountain, I'm thrilled to have air service starting this winter. Even though I have uber-reliable Mt Bachelor in my backyard, a looming El Nino could spell some dry periods for us here in the PNW. So for me, a quick hop to PDX, and then on to Mammoth Yosemite airport for some bro time with my graying buds back at Mammoth.
Even though Mammoth has lost some of it's soul due to the extensive grading and tree removal for traffic flow, that is still an awesome mountain. No ski area has better surface conditions after weeks of perfect bluebird skies. You guys know I'm an avid snowboarder, but I pack my skis first when I go to Mammoth. I know I'm relying on fond memories, but I can't stop gushing about the terrific groomers and perf windbuff on the Hump. (Hey Tony, remember the "Old" Hump, before they shaved the top off and changed the aerodynamics?)
Here are some weather observations to get us through the dog days of summer:
LONG RANGE:
THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE ONLY UNUSUAL TROF TO EFFECT THE MAMMOTH AREA THIS MONTH AS BOTH THE 06Z WEDNESDAY GFS AND THIS MORNINGS 12Z ECMWF, BOTH HAD ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT SYSTEM INTO CALIFORNIA ABOUT THE 14TH-15TH OF AUGUST.
THE DWEEBS ARE GETTING A STRANGE FEELING ABOUT THE UP COMING FALL......IT KINDA REMINDS ME OF THE SUMMER/FALL OF 1997. ALSO SOME RE-ANALYSIS CHARTS SHOW A SIMILAR AUGUST IN THE LATE 1940S. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF THE LONG WAVE WEST COAST TROF STRENGTHENS INTO SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER.
DR HOWARD AND THE DWEEBS......................
PS. EL NINO IS ALIVE, WELL AND GROWING IN THE EQUATORIAL EASTERN PACIFIC
