Hotel for one night in CO

Wife and I have managed to tag a couple of days onto a work trip at the end of Jan. Will be skiing somewhere close to Denver on Friday (maybe Loveland) and then need a hotel for just one night on Friday, before another day skiing someplace else on Saturday, depending on conditions and crowds. Any ideas on places to stay? Doesn't have to be at a resort, since we'll be driving anyway. I'm just not sure how easy it will be to find a place without a two-night minimum at the weekend. Thinking mid-range, but it's only one night so cost is not as much of an issue as it would be for a longer trip. Thanks for any ideas.

You haven't indicated any preference for where you want to ski on your second day. But it looks like you need to move back to Denver after your 2nd ski day. You might consider staying a night in Idaho Springs (on I-70), which is a good location to jump off to Mary Jane/Winter Park. If the weather is unfavorable, you can return to Loveland.

You can look up hotels for Idaho Springs on any web travel service. The hotels are not particularly fancy, but the town is decent and you can get a good meal there. You won't spend a fortune either.

Super 8 in Georgetown on the Denver side of the divide as well for cheap... Or Dillon/Silverthorne has quite a few 'moderate' priced places - that puts you in a more resorty area/feel without paying top $ at the base of one of the mtns... But it all depends on what day of the week, where you plan to ski, etc...

Thanks for the thoughts. We're on the red-eye at 11pm back to Boston on Saturday night, so we don't have to be too close to Denver. Was thinking Copper for Saturday maybe, or perhaps even going on to Vail or Breck. But Winter Park is another good alternative and we also thought about A-Basin (as long as it's not too cold) since we've never skied there - so many ski areas, so little time... (think I've just about covered the whole Front Range in my list of possibilities)

I think we'll probably end up trying to find somewhere nice to stay and then seeing what's nearby and what the conditions/crowds are going to be like. Not sure about Idaho Springs - always strikes me as a good place to get coffee and gas, but not sure about staying there. Our emphasis would probably be on trying to find a place with a bit more character rather than just a cheap bed. So Dillon area is probably more likely, all things considered, but if we find somewhere off the beaten track, that's good also.

Sorry I'm not being too specific but hope that helps a little.

Given your uncertainty of resort, I'd look at Dillon or Frisco. Close to most everything so you could pick & choose at last minute. Frisco has a Holiday Inn for example, a bunch of name brand hotels in Dillon/Silverthorne (la quinta's, days inn, etc...). Depending on the weather, you may not want to hit Vail/Beaver Creek given your timing. Vail pass can close very quickly in a storm which could make you miss your flight, whearas the tunnel does not close all that often (though can be very slick & slow driving in a storm - especially on a Sat evening).

Frisco/Dillon is my usual base when skiing CO. But the weekend crowd can fill all available slots; hence, my recommendation for Idaho Springs (Georgetown area) which are usually available. And I love the bumps at Mary Jane. If you opt for Frisco/Dillon I'd look carefully at non-chain operations like Frisco Lodge and Snowshoe Motel. Often, these have a room and both have their own websites and are listed on Kayak.com.
