in bound avalance at a-basin kills skier

That is why I ski with Reccor reflectors. It is not liklely to happen, but can. Especially in Europe. In bound avi's are much less likely in the US, IMO.

Word from local patrol is that they provide little more than a false sense of security. You're better off with a beacon, although with the weight of that A-Basin slide I'm sure that it was the trauma that killed him, not the burial.

I agree, but they are better than nothing. They only work with a special transciever used on the mountain, so rescue will only come from patrol, not any ski buddies. Thay are used much more extensively in Europe, but patrol there is so much less visible that I wonder how long it takes them to respond. If nothing else it aids in body recovery.

By the time you are located with a Recco system, it is definitely a body reovery. It does make it easier for S&R though. Recco is great for finding lost people. A beacon is only useful if you have a buddy with a beacon right there to do the search for you. Of course they need to be carrying a Shovel at the very least to dig your butt out. Sadly this guy never had a chance. Really weird weather for that week. Two snowboarders got caught in a wet slide on Buffalo Mountain earlier in the week. The warning signs were all around that the warm temps were wreaking havoc on the snowpack. Still, I would never have thought that a slide would happen as early as 10:30 in the morning. Especially in a high use area at the resort.

yeah, that was strange and tragic. the release was in a mogul field, no less. and fyi, coroners confirmed that the death was caused by trauma.

no freezing temps for a week straight was obviously the culprit, but still, in a field of huge moguls? really bizarre.
