it was so beautiful

The sound is what I remember most. That stifled desperation. Squealing and howling from beneath three feet of snow. It?s been about six weeks. I?m quite okay about it now, but every once in a while, I?ll hear it. Just for a second, then it recedes back to the filing cabinet in my head.

Today, 1.18.05, was a first. I was on the mountain. While skinning up Hunter Ridge, I looked down upon this creature,

and she made that conceding cry. But she didn?t. Not today. I was there, but I wasn?t really there. Just for a frozen moment, then all was right in the world. I began to notice everything. Meticulously examining. Keenly aware of every stark detail.

Evaluation and appreciation merged into one notion. Of the snow, the trees, and the swirling clouds in the fading sky. It all came together when this dark creature, Winter, put her silhouette in the picture. It was beautiful.

The snowbath ritual always brings a smile.

While she did more of that and romped about on Weathertop, I watched sundown. Gold and white and gray and blue.

A luminous cloud plume bathed the peaks until a brilliant copper burst seemed to be the finale.

As colors began to dull, Winter and I departed. At day?s last light, my headcam shutter dilates to compensate. It?s trying to let more light in, but motion adds another effect. It?s subtle and difficult to describe, but I?ll try.

While watching, you?ll feel more like you?re moving than you have through watching any of my previous mini-vids, in a slow-motion-at-high-speed kind of way. Much like when you?re actually skiing trees, certain things blur and certain things do not ? like peripherals vs. line-of-site. I wish I had control over that shutter, because I?d use this setting more often if I could.

So these are the best clips my new ?invention? has captured to date. Hope you like:

And when we emerged from the trees into the gully, we saw that the finale hadn?t occurred while we were atop the ridge. Mother Nature came out for an encore and it was suddenly

happening

right

now.
