I have pretty mixed feelings about Jackson Hole. I skied there in 1994 and found it the most expensive area that we have skied and it has a lot of trails that cross traverses. This numerous crossings can scare the h--- out of experts and intermediates alike. We found no discounts for anything, anywhere.

We liked Grand Targee a lot more (and it is cheaper), even though its terrain is less radical than JH. Moreover, the drive between Jackson Hole and Wilson, ID has numerous backcountry opportunities that make me drool. The only "discounts" seem to be the more visible BC slopes that look like a lot of fun for the effort. Sadly, I know that jumping into unfamiliar BC is tricky and often ill-advised--but it looks terrific. Hope you have a good trip--but we never found any deals.
Cheers,
Jeff

Jackson will suck you in and spit you out! the deals available for visitors are tough to come by, but they are out there. lodging/lift deals up the ying yang. it's just a matter of finding them and planning in advance. however, lift access only deals is nearly impossible to come by unless you know people in high places. it's even worse at BB, and thier non-profit. well, look are the bargaining power they've got! not so much anywhere else in the area. IMO

being a college student at MSU had it's benefits this year. :D

Your best bet is to book a package deal with lifts and lodging inclusive.

Because there is only one place to ski in JH (not including Grand Targhee which is an hour away) there is little competition to keep prices down. You are a prisoner to the resort pricing.

The terrain is awesome at JH, and they recently got a huge dump of snow. This is why it is such a popular place. I think everyone who is a serious skier should go there at least once. While I'd like to return, I didn't find it economical and it can be hit or miss with the snow. BC and the Wasatch are much better bets for powder, terrain, variety and price.

I have found that when I go on vacation, I like to go to more than one resort. While at JH you can get to Grand Targhee (I recommend that). I eventually found myself a bit bored with JH day after day. I'd rather be in SLC where I have many resorts to choose from to break it up and find new adventure. BC also has many resorts but requires a bit more driving and planning, however, driving through the Canadian Rockies is spectacular, and there are hot springs along to way to break up the drives. The Sierra Nevada/Tahoe area also offers variety of skiing locales.

It definitely takes more energy to get up and go to a different ski area each day (or after a couple of days), and I can see how many people prefer to go one place for a full week so they don't have the hassle of packing up and driving. JH is a great place to be for a full week if that is the type of trip you like. But take a day and try Grand Targhee, and maybe take a day and go to Yellowstone on snowmobile or xc skiing. We went xc skiing and we were rewarded with some close-up moose sitings and spectacular skiing.

Not necessarily, there's a cheaper way if you can live without the luxury.

You just need to combine the two and add Montana to make it really interesting.

I'll tell you when I get back in February. :D

Yeah, this year, a Big Sky-Targhee-Jackson Hole tour could be pretty epic.

And actually, although I never have been, Jackson Hole has another smaller resort: http://www.snowking.com/

Might be there in Feb. or March, is Snow King worth a day?

Patrick and I are doing the Big Sky-Targhee-Jackson tour last week of January. March is too late for JH with the SE exposure. I've done it twice, and even with a 110-inch base in March 1986 it was so bad that we bailed and spent the rest of the week at AltaBird.

And I'm staying a few extra days in SLC to ski Altabird, etc. :D

May the Powder Gods be with you! Sounds like an awesome trip. I'll be at Big Sky the next 3 days, it's half-price week for frequency card holders (Big Sky only).
