January 27th - PC, DV or Canyons?

Hello,
I have been trying to follow which resort will have the best conditions, but I would like to ask a "local" on where they would go.
Will be arriving around 8:30 in the morning and hope to use the Park City promo for the free ski day.
Last year. we used took advantage of the same promo and we went to PC. Had no complaints. Later that week we went to DV and had a great time skiing the Empire Canyon area as well as the Lady Morgan lift area.

Any suggestions for this year? The long range report suggests that a storm maybe coming in that week as well.

Where are you staying? The good stuff is in LCC. I skied it today (Monday day 35 for the season.) and the FTO crew and I skied powder all day! Of course, I live 16 miles from the Wildcat Base. PM me for info.

We found on Sunday that lots of the people in town for Sundance stay in Deer Valley. Since nearly everything there is ski-in ski-out, that's where those people will ski when they aren't watching films. There's not enough crowding to generate lift lines, but some slopes are congested and can get scraped down to the man-made base.

Admin has skied Park City during Sundance in other years and seen no increase above normal skier traffic.

The short answer to your question is that The Canyons is probably least crowded, but Park City has Jupiter Bowl with snow surfaces more like the Big Cottonwood areas.

During my usual March trips Deer Valley is often better than the other 2 in terms of surfaces because it has a higher proportion of north-facing terrain. In January this doesn't matter as much.

Peter is of course correct about better conditions in the Cottonwood areas. So hopefully my advice above will apply to the free promotion and not most of your skiing on this trip.

I would imagine there is less traffic in DV due to its ski only stance. I've been there twice, both the days of arrival to SLC. Both times were in March, and both times included a very nice lunch prior to skiing. The first time the conditions were nice, soft, and even had powder tucked into evenly spaced aspens. The second time was after a very warm 2 weeks without snow, and it was pretty icy. But that was march.

Doesn't PC have a bit a night skiing. Wouldn't you get better value out of skiing there?

In general I would agree with rfarren's comment about Deer Valley, but not during Sundance Film Festival. We were there Sunday, so now we know.

It's hard for me to recommend a vacationing skier messing with night skiing. That's not why you're in Utah. Save your energy for exploring the great terrain available during the day.

Thanks for the responses. We generally ski Alta and Snowbird with a side trip Solitude. We are staying at the bottom of BCC.
I was trying to get a feel on what mountain near Park City would have the best conditions for that first day of arrival. Last year we skied at PC. It was snowing that day and they did have night skiing there as well. But when you are up at 3:30 in the morning to make that early morning flight, skiing past 4 in the afternoon becomes very tiresome. Between PC and DV, I would have to say that we had a better time at DV.

You might consider Alta's "Ski Free After 3" deal. Sure, it's restricted to just the Sunnyside triple in Albion Basin, and other than Vail Ridge, is all green circle, but it's still fun, and did I mention free?
