I got up a little late and didn’t hit the slopes til’ almost 10 am. The Skyeship was running and I took my first run if the day there. Today’s story was the wind. All day, the winds were howling, making skiing much less enjoyable than it otherwise might have been. It’s on days like today when I am grateful for the 2 gondies. Lift lines were short all over the mountain, even at the K1. Generally, the conditions were packed powder with some man made fluff on top over on the Skye-Bear side of the hill. As the day wore on, the slopes started to really get skied off, though. Rocks really started to show through the snow. Great Northern and Eastern were very bare by the end of the day. Outer Limits was in good shape, except the guns were blasting right in my face on the way down and for someone who not a particularly good bump skier (i.e. me) it was tough. My goggles were frosted over by the time my sore carcass and I got the bottom of the hill. Those 3 wipeout hurt, but the last two came at the very bottom when I couldn’t see. That was another constant problem. It seemed like every trail I decided to ski had snowguns on it. And the truth is that K is just not blowing that much snow. I was blinded on Skyeway and few other trails. The 35 MPH+ winds whipping snow in my face made for some interesting skiing. I guess I can’t complain that they’re blowing snow, but it seems like they are only resurfacing a fraction of the trails. From my point of view today, almost every trail had some bare or thin spot. Although almost all of the trails on the Skye-Bear side held up better than the Killington side ones. That might have been because of all the snow they are blowing over there.

The true highlight of the day was skiing to Snowshed to pick up my mE-ticket. The wind was, again, howling and skiing down to Snowshed was downright dangerous at times (due to the snowguns in your face on Skye Peak and Snowdon). When we came out at around 2:30 we figured we’d take a lift up, ski High Road to Carpenter’s Run and back to the house (on an almost openable Home Stretch, if you missed my prior posts), but only ONE double was running and the line looked forever long. Skied/poled over to Rams Head and took the coldest chairlift ride in recent memory to the top. Skied back by a roundabout route.

As for the weather and were they are blowing- it’s about 18 degrees here at 10:03 where I’m staying off of Home Stretch and snowing lightly. Only a dusting to this point, but perhaps and inch at the peak by tomorrow. Guns were on OL, lower Superstar, Superpipe (Gee, my favorite), Bear Claw, Skyeway, and perhaps a few others. Conditions might be better tomorrow with additional resurfacing, but K needs some snow to really boost the conditions. NWS predicts snow showers tomorrow and tomorrow night. We’ll see.

Dave
www.geocities.com/tigerskier
Visit my killington website. Every trail, lift and mountain has its own page, comlete with pictures and a description! URL listed above.
