Killington Opening

As mentioned in the "questions to ponder" discussion.

The news I heard this weekend is unsettling at the least. This is what a member of Killington management told us. They do want to open by next weekend 11/6 but......
(...)
They are seriously worried about an onslaught of eager early skiers the likes of which would spell disaster with the current parking situation and the fact there will only be 3-4 runs open. Not to mention they dont have the employees yet.

Here's the bad part if they dont get enough cold weather in time and enough employees hired they possibly will not open until Thanksgiving.
(...)
The web site and the Killington "lie line" are still claiming as soon as they get a few straight days of cold they will start the snow making. (when they start making snow and when they open are two entirely different things).

I guess if they aim for the Monday, the onslaught shouldn't be overwhelming. Weather wise (we had flurries in Ottawa this morning), we are getting warmer weather this weekend with colder temps midweek. I would be surprise (base on what I am seeing) if St-Sauveur would be able to open on Monday.

Is anyone else in the opening day running this year or Killington is the only one that can make it happen? They have the technology, the weather, however with top-to-bottom business is not going to be easy.

I guess that maybe they realized that last year late opening (vs others and themselves) might have been a wake up call?

It's going to be interesting!!!!

Belleayre is still sticking by it's projected 11/6 opening and it is snowing there as we speak. They are determined to open by 11/6 and I hope they beat K to the punch!

HAPPY DAYZ R HERE AGAIN... 4 MORE YEARS FOR G.W.B AND MIGHTY K TO SPIN ON MONDAY... WILL BE THERE FOR SURE!!!! :) HAVE A SAFE WINTER, ALL!!!!!!! TURN EM GOOD!!!!!!

Well, you're half right. I now hear that ASC is thinking of hiring Diebold to "certify" their ski reports. Meanwhile, as for the finally & thankfully imminent ski season? Bring it on!

I just now that the Canadian dollars shot up by over 1cent US versus the American dollars yesterday, a 12 year high.

That is a 10c gain since May, and a 20c gain in the last two years. The American dollars is now roughtly worth 21% more than the canadian $ compared to 62% two years ago.

I don't think the top to bottom thing is as difficult as it might seem because the the K1 gondi only runs to the KBL. Granted this can be called top to bottom, but the elevation of the KBL is above 2,000 feet while say the base of Bear is probably 1,500 and the Skyship base is probably in the 900-1,200 foot range. Say on average you get a 3-5 degree temp difference per 1,000 vertical feet...and killington's KBL is at 30 degrees while the Skyship base is above freezing. Big difference in snowmaking temps.

I think what Patrick was getting at was the amount of terrain that needs to be covered -- that's Great Northern from the top of the gondi down to the Glades, then across Snowden and back to the gondi base. We're talking miles here. By comparison, the two Canadian entrants to the race -- Mont-Saint-Sauveur and Mont-Saint-Bruno, only have ~500 vertical feet and ~300 vertical feet, respectively, to cover. Both can open with only 24 hours of snowmaking weather, so I wouldn't be surprised to see either open ahead of Killington's announced Monday opening. Both of those two Québecois areas opened on Sunday, Nov. 9 last year (St.-Bruno opened for night skiing after spending more time during the day on the 9th making snow prior to opening).

BTW, I'll be at Killington on Thursday with wife and son in tow. If any FTO readers plan to be in attendance, feel free to let me know and we can try to hook up for some turns.

I'm in Denver then. I may go out and make some Kmart turns on Saturday but 'tis gonna be ugly out there until they can get more terrain online. I figg'r I'll do 7:45 to 10:00 and go find something else to do.

Thanks Marc, that's exactly what I meant about the challenge of top-to-bottom for Killington. Even if the Peak area is definately colder compared to the Base. However the Base elevation is definately much colder than lower in the valley. When Killington was able to limit early/late skiing to the top, they would have such a jump, weather wise, on the competition.

I would be surprised if the Quebec areas (Sauveur and Bruno) could open before Monday, temps are suppose to head back up (+rain) on the weekend. It's was +3c this morning in town compared to -4c yesterday and that weather system is moving towards Quebec.

Killington on Thursday..mmmmh. I have the day off on that day, however we're going to see R.E.M. in Ottawa that evening. :?

Have fun...

It'll be a last minute decision for me; looks like at least Belleayre will open on Saturday and I'll have to see how I feel about a 3 hour drive to K if I can drive 1 1/4 hour to Belleayre 2 days later.

Actually, it might be the other way around this year (if we're willing to put up with the hassel at the border) . The American Dollars is only worth an extra 19% today.

I might add on my Christmas Wish list a few things from the New England Ski Museum.

US Skiing, for us Canadians hasn't been close to be this affordable since George Bush SR has been president.
