OK I've had enough reading the weather reports....Just booked my flight to SLC for Sunday morning. I should be able to get at least half a day in then. Staying until Feb 1.....should be totaly spent by then...hope it pukes...or at least snows a lot during the week. Report calling for a nice dump saturday.

Safe travels! See ya here.

I land in SLC tonight, Alta's the plan for Friday. I'd really love to get back up to Snowbasin this weekend to beat the crowds, show some friends how great it is, and get some great lunch. I've been watching their snotel site, looks like they're getting about 1/2 the snow that LCC/BCC are. Any thoughts on if it'll be worth it? My thought is the first powder day (weekend) in a while will be nuts in LCC (maybe Solitude's the call?).

I just looked and it looks like it's 38 at snowbasin (SNI Snotel) vs. 20 at alta. Maybe that makes my decision for me?

Basically, i'm just really excited to get out there so I thought I'd spark up a conversation now that snow's falling again.

What am I, chopped liver?
Yes, you go to Alta 80% of the time regardless of relative conditions. BobbyD kills it at Snowbasin when there's enough fresh snow and virtually no competition for it. Admin rarely serves up a softball as fat as this one. :stir:

Like Tony said, I know where you'll be (not that I blame you), I wanna know from the guy who goes wherever depending on crowds/snow/etc where HE'S going. Really, I just wanna know if Snowbasin on Saturday is an okay choice vs. Alta/Snowbird. Def going to Alta tomorrow, and Sunday we'll be somewhere in LCC/BCC b/c of our flights which leaves Saturday as the day we can go anywhere.

Don't overestimate Bobby's penchant for diversity. He'll be at AltaBird 90%+ of the time, and Snowbasin <10% of the time. Anywhere else, 0% of the time. He hardly "goes wherever."

Fair enough. I'll just watch the SNOTEL stations early Sat and make the call I guess. Any thoughts on heading up there?

Given that these storms have been coming in warm and wet with a high snow line (+/- at my house at 5000 ft), the snow rates to be drier the higher you go. As a result I think that I'll stay closer to home this weekend. Also I'd need a day's advance notice to go up there.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll just keep an eye out on the weather. If I remember correctly the Friday storm is colder so maybe it'll make sense. Guess its a last minute call for us again.

IIRC Admin said BobbyD logged 20+ days at Snowbasin last season. I also recall him leading an impressive sidecountry tour at Powder Mt. in 2007: viewtopic.php?t=2846

Given the thinner base at Snowbasin and the snow elevation comments, I would also lean to LCC based upon current info. One other tip from last year: If there are gradual terrain openings on a powder day due to avy control, it's worth considering the AltaBird pass to cherry pick what's fresh and open at both places. Several of admin's friends with combined passes do this routinely.

Another good idea. Tomorrow may be the day for that. Thanks for reminding me. It should be money well spent.

Question for the locals, got the email notification form the SLC sheriff saying they're closing LCC at 6:15am for avalanche control, worth getting up there before the closure and if so do they shut it right at 6:15am, do I need to be up the canyon by 6:15? Just trying to figure out what time to get there if we're actually going to do it.

FYI you can buy the usual discounted ski shop pass for one area, start there and buy the upgrade on the fly (at the Baldy/Sugarloaf crossing) if the sequence of openings during the day favors the other area.

Looks like I'll be arriving at a great time, if all goes well i should be at Alta by noon Sunday.......1 to 3 feet predicted by then.......now I just have to remeber how to ski the stuff...all hardpack so far for me this season...well manmade storms but that...aint the same.

As far as I know they no longer sell the upgrades at the Taliban Checkpoint. You have to buy it at the main ticket window of the mountain for which you hold the original ticket.
