We had 6-8 inches fall during the day on Sunday, but it was fairly wet as snow level was close to 7,000. It got colder overnight, but was still a little heavy this morning. It got colder this afternoon and snow got much drier. I'm too tired from a lot of my first two days this year being powder and a lot of driving to post pictures or any more tonight.

From Kirkwood's website today:

Last 24 hours 16-20" Season Total Range 88-108"
Last 48 hours 18-22" Mid Mountain Base 44-57"
Last 7 days 70-80 Storm Total 16-20"

And they go into full operation tomorrow:

Thanks to nearly two feet of new snow – top to bottom, all snow, all the time – we are announcing the opening of the backside of the mountain, Chairs 2,3 & 4, for tomorrow, Tuesday12/23. Patrol will be working on snow safety, so plan on the backside of the resort to open closer to midday.

the wood 12/23 ......another foot in the parking lot today, nice dry pow. beautiful bluebird day. expecting 3 feet for xmas. couldnt be prettier.

Hayduke, That was my story last year, I should have stayed longer as it seemed like on a lot of trips I was leaving just when the big storm was starting to hit. With a Heavenly pass, it didn't matter as much because the top would always close and sometime the whole mountain would shutdown for a day or two. I will have to do more solo trips this year so I can be more flexible. I could have gotten out of work yesterday, but had Christmas and Christmas Eve dinner shopping to finish and two teenagers who had already used the two teen tickets I had gotten at Costco plus two Tahoe Card tickets.

This first trip of the year was my shakedown to get on the snow before Christmas and plan better for New Year's Day when my $229 pass will again be valid. I couldn't find my Avocet Vertech watch so vertical is more estimated than usual and when I went to my storage to get ski rack and other gear, I was sidetracked getting Christmas decorations and forgot about the rack. Since we only had one pair of skis and two teenagers with snowboards, we went without the rack. I had Michelin LTX M/S installed on Sat. at Costco in Santa Clara. It was not supposed to storm until late Sunday, but we starting getting drizzle leaving Stockton. Going through Pine Grove, elevation 2500, the bank thermometers said 38 and 39 degrees so I thought it would be snowing at 4500-5000 feet, but it didn’t start until 6500-7000. After Silver Lake (elevation 7200), I saw a Tahoe that I think was going the other way, with its front end in the snowbank. Around the next turn, a Highlander and another vehicle going my way had stopped going forward were slowly sliding sideways across the other lane into the bank. I made sure I had room, stayed to the right where there was more unplowed snow and cruised by at 10-15 mph without a problem.

The season pass line was less than 10 minutes, then I made the mistake of getting on Solitude where I had recommended my son and his friend warm up. The lift stopped for a good ten minutes. I caught up with them and we skied down to The Reut chair where we found some untracked on Conestoga. Next run I found more lightly tracked under the lift on skier's left side of the chair. I moved over to high-speed Cornice where I followed person I rode the lift with down Olympic where we headed down the gullies about halfway down and found some good snow and pretty good coverage. We did that two more times and then I move to Sentinel where I was the only one skiing the little trees to the left of the bowl. I found a lot of untracked and did that four times including twice going down the gullies to Hole-in-the-Wall chair.

I went into Bubb’s Pub to watch the end of the 49ers game and was surprised to see them turn a 3-16 deficit into a 17-16 win while I had a Porter and a Power Bar. After lunch, I headed to Olympic where it was snowing so hard that tracks were being refilled. Since The Wall was open, I went up where the snow at the top was in excellent condition and I was able to find untracked by staying to the right of the chair. I got back to the car to find 6-8” had fallen during the day. 15 runs, estimated 17.5K vertical with some powder every run. I’ll post Monday’s report and try to get better at matching picture limitations when I have more time. Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS...........and one of the best days ever for me. another foot of great snow with maybe 2 more coming tonight. untracked everywhere. there is no one here......and its xmas vacation!
i also got new snow tires for tahoe.but i think those fancy gourmet chains that i am learning about (mine are walmart) would have been smarter since they need to be on my 2wd anyway. and i am also leaning to avoid solitude chair.
i havent even seen half the terrain yet and i love it.
and my 6wood is already a steal....8 days and counting \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

I only have two days on my 6wood, but at $229 I feel like feel like I will break even with five days and eleven days will get me down to $20/day. I logged 175 miles from my house in San Jose to Kirkwood using the shortest route. Since more than half of it is on two lane roads, you are doing good to be under 3.5 hours, expecially with any snow or ice on the road. I also got what will be an expensive reminder from the CHP after skiing that speed limit is 25 when in chain control, even in the road is mostly dry. I was written up for 44 when I passed someone with chains at the bottom of Carson Pass going towards So. Shore where they should have taken off controls. I will always use my radar detector on CA-88.

For Christmas, I signed my wife up for the three days Women's Weekend at the beginning of March which I hope will be a chance to get her more comfortable with powder. It will probably end up requiring an equipment upgrade as it includes complimentary demos, an equipment analysis and a private shopping party. We will be staying two nights at Kirkwood to avoid the drive to So. Shore.

I don't have a lot to report from skiing 12/22. I'm late on reports due to work, Christmas and loss of free wireless (from unknown neighbor) at cabin in So. Tahoe. We did not get on the hill until 11 since I was taking advantage of a free alignment I won in So. Tahoe, getting hot wax for my son and I, picking up breakfast and lunch for two teenagers who I let sleep in until 8:30 or 9 plus cleaning up and closing up the cabin. We parked close by edging into 2 foot soft bank, but Kirkwood parking staff didn't like it and moved cones so I could still be close.

The snow was deeper, but more skiied out than on Sunday. I took three runs on Cornice: Olympic, Sentinel and Monte Wolf. I found some untracked and took a few falls including one in little trees on left side of Monte Wolf where I had to remove my skis to get untangled. I moved to The Wall where there was a 3-4 foot drop to get off the entrance road. The upper run had good packed powder and I found untracked by staying skiers right. I also got some untracked entering the gully next to the chair that is becoming filled in enough to be skiable. Next run I stayed further right and following run I tried the left which was untracked, but a little heavy from the little sun that had been out earlier.

After lunch, where I got to the car in time to get the last bite of the Safeway sandwich from my son plus the leftover sandwich from the previous, I took them to Hole-in-the-Wall where they spent the rest of the day jumping off the stump in these picture and hitting the park features just below the stump. The snow surface on Hole-in-the-Wall was excellent as it had gotten colder and that area does not get skied too hard. Cornice was closed after lunch. I thought it was from wind, but The Wall was still running so it may have been mechanical as it seemed to stop more and longer than usual that day. I took Solitude to get to The Reut where I took two fast runs before picking up my son and his friend at Hole-in-the-Wall. The drive home was long due to snow down to about 4,000 feet and dropping my son's friend in Sunnyvale.
Runs 14/Vertical estimated at 14K.

friday 12/26
what a great day.
dug out the car from a good 3ft drift. next time must bring snow shovel/sorels.
bluebird from the get-go. my first time on the backside, untracked everywhere, thigh-deep. lift 4 then closes abruptly leaving a lot of frustration in the maze, and much worse for those stuck midway.
