Both Kirkwood’s and my season got off to a slow start. They opened with one run on manmade snow a couple of weeks ago, went to three runs, then nine before getting enough snow to open their backside on Friday and all lifts except the new last year drag lifts. While Sierra resorts PR says this will be one of the best Christmas’ for snow in 20 or 25 years, there is still a lot of volcanic reef showing and just under the snow. I had to scrape down one especially bad scratch during lunch and may rent a snowboard or demo skis tomorrow as mine already need work.
I picked today and tomorrow a couple of weeks ago when long-range accuweather showed a storm Monday. We saw a little snow at 3,000 feet on the way up and the usual CA drivers leaving the roads in the snow. The drive took 4 hours which is about 30 minute extra. I took one run on Timber Creek with my son before moving to Cornice which had a couple of minute line. I went left at the top of the chair and came down the gullies on Monte Wolfe where snow was light, but mostly tracked until I reached trees near the bottom. Next run, I went left along the cornice and hiked up to where I dropped of the cornice into untracked. The northwest facing had a little crust from the wind so I went to the more southeast facing where I found great snow, steep and untracked. It was so good that I passed up now open chair 10 and did it again and my tracks were the only ones.
I went up chair 10 twice and skied east facing Eagle Bowl. The snow was good and less wind and sun affected than usual, but when I went left below Norm’s Nose, I began to find a lot of rocks. The snow there was very good so I did it again, being a little more careful of the rocks. It snowed off and off all day. The sun came out during lunch, but the clouds returned and temperature dropped in the afternoon to the mid-teens while the wind picked up. Chair 10 after lunch was miserable at the top. The backside was better. 17 runs/20.5Kvertical and I am b
