Kirkwood received a trace of new snow both days. The Season Total Ranges from 300-372" with a Mid Mountain Base 122-170" and Last 7 days 24-28
My wife got to use a free ticket they gave all Kirkwood passholders to make up for problems they’ve had this season. She almost backed out of going on Thurs. when 6-10 inches and a cold storm were predicted for Sat, but they backed that off to 1-2 inches on Friday so we left San Jose about 6 AM. We were on the lifts before 10 and, after a warmup on Timber Creek, went to the backside. The snow on the groomers was excellent, but the crud in between had not been skied out and was difficult. I found better snow by taking the drag lifts and skirting the boundary line, but it was nowhere near great powder. Later, I was surprised how soft the soft was towards the bottom of the T-bar runs that returned to the meadow where the Extreme competition ended. I think it was soft both from not being packed out and from being fairly warm since the snow fell earlier in the week.
Both days we stashed lunch under a tree near the base of competition and had lunch watching skiers coming down some crazy lines and jumping up to 50 feet off rocks. Many competitors fell Sat. when they started from looker’s right of the Cirque. Sun. was the finals and they started from looker’s left and there were a lot fewer crashes and competitors. Some of the best views of the competition were going up chair 2, from the T-bar and from the top of the T-bar. It snowed lightly a little on and off on Sat. and we got a few flakes overnight in So. Tahoe. Mt. Rose reported three inches new and Heavenly one on Sunday. Sunday started clear and was warm, but it started snowing hard in the afternoon so we quit before 3. Since I was skiing part of both days with my wife, my vertical totals were down. Sat 15K and Sun almost 18K.
