I cleaned and closed up cabin and left So . Tahoe at 9:35 and was on Timber Creek lift at Kirkwood an hour later. Friend who had stayed with me and his son who has promoted from liftee at Kirkwood to groomer there and now is on lift maintenance at Heavenly (he skis from lift to lift most of the day and will work year-round) in two years were an hour ahead of me. It took us a while to get together. While going up Cornice for the second time I thought they were on chair 2 heading for the Backside, but they were behind me and couldn’t catch up when I skated to and jumped into Sentinel then blasted down still firm and smooth run. I probably should have tried Wall lift to Eagle Bowl to chair 2 to Backside, but took lower Reut chair, then chair 2 and rode my first of 4 Sunrise chairs about 11:30 (lift times from EpicMix having some issues). Next time up I saw them and we were totally out of synch so I tried riding shorter chair 3 to get in synch, but at some point they stopped and waited for me at bottom of Sunrise/#4, but not long enough so we stayed out of synch. (There is no cell service at bottom of chair 4 and almost all of chair 3.) I saw them from lift when I was closer to bottom, but they were leaving for 7800 bar/restaurant and offered to buy me a beer, but I had a pocket beer and sandwich so I continued riding and skiing Sunrise. My Backside runs were excellent Cold Shoulder, then starting in not totally packed out or smooth Hully Gully and finishing in Cold Shoulder, then Happiness Is. Beer is out of focus, but maybe you can see tracks on 99 Steps (top center).

After eating my lunch on 4th lift ride, I skied excellent smooth ungroomed on shoulder of gully past Cold Shoulder to Thunder Saddle. Run had been closed for Extreme qualifying on Tuesday and was now open with a couple of inches of settled smooth, and where exposed to morning sun soft, untracked that I tore up.

Photos from where I skied at top and bottom of Thunder Saddle. Great snow especially as it was new over 4 days ago.

I then rode chair 2 and skied Low Whiskey (good thing I did not try High Whiskey as it’s mostly burned off) and met friend and son at Wall/#10 (my mistake I meant to meet them at Reut/#11 as it’s a slightly shorter walk and better warm-up after a break) just before 1. N-facing Wall was still firm so we followed ski patrol to looker’s right edge where it was softening and mostly smooth. We saw a skier take a very aggressive path between rocks above us through a barely skiable gap in the real Wall.

Somebody on patrol or mountain ops has a sense of humor. Even at Kirkwood, near the bottom there is a growing bare spot. W-facing High Whiskey in background towards left is burning off and may barely go. I took groomed Low Whiskey that is behind trees right of center.

After a lap on the Reut, we did a few laps on Cornice, skiing Sentinel at least twice and main steep groomer Zachary and ungroomed Olympic once each before returning to the Wall for a couple of laps. Snow on Wall had softened, I found some good lines and snow in middle, but lower part of it was getting too soft and slow. Snow was still very good for our last run down Sentinel after 3:30. I quit at 3:45 with over 23K and was on road at 4 and home at 7:30 after stop for newish, so not totally overrun, In-N-Out very close to I-5 at Louise Ave, S of Stockton where I had a rare for me, but well deserved after 7 days in a row averaging 24.5K of Tahoe Spring skiing, chocolate shake to go with my burger.

Interesting. My first 7 days of Euro spring skiing averaged 26.5K. Then the weather hit so the last 4 have averaged 17K.

I also recall hitting a newish In-N-Out in that area on my way from home to Yreka/Mt. Ashland in February 2021.

I thought you were having some impressive days, but it sounded like some of it was groomers and many lifts there have more vertical than most of So. Tahoe, where I was for 5 of my 7 days. Heavenly's tram and Gunbarrel are both under 1600, while the not skiable at this point this season Gondola is 2874 according to liftblog.org - Kirkwood's Wall lift is 1615, but not a high-speed so laps are at least 15 min and it's often only skiable in Spring conditions from 1-4.

I plan to get in at least one more trip, probably including Kirkwood's scheduled closing day of 5/1, maybe with Squaw who has announced the same closing date, during preceding week, with some days at Mammoth in between. I'm currently at 31 days, same as 19-20 and one less than 20-21. 21 are on my Senior Tahoe Value Pass and 10 are on $929 (with TGR discount) full Ikon that we bought for planned week in Aspen.

This year my excuse is my wife's injury which kept my home for over a month in mid-Winter. Lucia is not planning to ski again this year but does plan to go next year. I bought new toes and heels (almost worn through) for her boots last week, which were re-certified with longer screws put in toes, and plan to renew ($979 renewal payable over 6 months) our full Ikons for next year. I don't think I'll buy her a new much less expensive Tahoe Value Pass as hers has been refunded the last three years and it was very difficult to carry over credit from only using 3 days in first pandemic season.

Yes the Alps have been mostly groomers aside from 3 of the guided days at Val Thorens. And yes most lifts are high speed and tend have more vertical than in North America.

Why is Lucia on full Ikon for 2023? IIRC Aspen was the reason for 2022. FYI the payment plan for Ikon for 2023 has buggy software and couldn't be fixed even with an Ikon customer service phone call. It's farmed out to a third party company Affirm, and I did not have the patience for another late night (over here) phone call.

Haven't bought anything yet, but https://www.ikonpass.com/en/faq#PassAccess includes
"Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Aspen Snowmass, Deer Valley Resort, Alta Ski Area, Sun Valley, Snowbasin are not included in the Ikon Base Pass for 22/23, however five-day access to these destinations is available, subject to blackout dates, with the purchase of the Ikon Base Plus Pass" and "Ikon Base Pass holders get 5 days at Snowbird with blackouts, with no access to Alta Ski Area."

The difference in price between full Ikon ($1079/$979 renewal) and Ikon Base Plus Pass ($969/$919 renewal) is only $60 renewal which seems like it would make sense to add Holiday access to Palisades, even if it was hard to get there during this Dec. holidays due to too much snow, then crowding when it opened. Base pass at $769/$719 renewal, loses Snowbasin, Sun Valley and Alta (and JHMR, Aspen and Deer Valley). We hope to try again for Steamboat, Copper and Aspen and beside trying to join your group at Snowbird, SkiTalk group will most likely be there during preceding week so the 7 vs. 5 days in LCC from Full vs. Base or Base Plus also seems to make sense.

I didn't have any problem paying through Affirm over 6 months and think I set it all up online. I have a Rewards checking account that requires $400 spending each month (among other things) to get $20 or a little more interest and I think Affirm charges counted towards that.

Not sure that I like Affirm. I was disappointed when they switched to that last year. Just infinite emails, texts, etc... from them ever since for starters. I haven't decided if I just go ahead and pay up front this year for Ikon vs the 20 screens of intimate detail required for the credit/loan Affirm does.

As to base plus vs full Ikon, I find it hard to believe they even bother with the base plus pass. Far too close in cost for any kind of meaningful $ difference. A single extra day beyond 5 or on a holiday at a blackout area makes the full an easy choice.

I was on a payment plan last year and I did not recall even the name Affirm, much less getting a bunch of e-mails from them. I got emails last night even though neither I nor the Ikon rep could get the payment plan option to work.

Yes the $ difference between full and base plus has become trivial. My observation about Lucia is that even in past years without injury she’s not skiing enough to make an expensive pass a good value.

Lucia didn't retire until late Jan 2020 and we were in Puerto Vallarta a week or two before that. She skied the first three days of 2020 on her Tahoe Value pass and planned to use it more that Spring. That season she used her base Ikon pass for 6 days in UT; 1 Solbright and 5 Altabird before all Ikon results shut down for COVID 3/14/20. (I skied the departure day from Iron Blossom while she didn't). So she hasn't had a retired season without COVID, which she has been much more afraid of than me. (We both received our 2nd booster today which will end our participation in the Kaiser/Pfizer/BioNTech study.)

I'm concerned that if she doesn't have a pass, she won't go skiing and will be unhappy when I'm gone 50 days, or it will quickly cost more than a pass when you consider a good (like Ikon friends and family) price for Altabird combined was over $130 this season and Mammoth or Palisades is $150 or more. Vail gave her COVID credit toward 2020-21 pass that was also refunded due to not using it due to poor snow/COVID stay-at-home order in our County (a qualifying event). The credit carried over to 2021-22 pass that was refunded due to injury after she got hurt on 3rd day using it. But if credit wasn't carried over, the four days (3 on Buddy tickets/1 on employee 1/2 price) she skied in 2020-21 cost about the same as refund, and she may have skied a couple of more partial days if on a pass.

OpenSnow prediction for Kirkwood is another 7" Tues. next week with 2" on Mon, and now also showing 2" on both Thu and Fri, when I need to be home preparing for Easter company. I could hit the last weekend of current Red Dog lift (being upgraded to hi-speed 6-pack) at Palisades on Sun, assuming they don't shut it down early as they did KT last weekend, then go to Kirkwood.

Since next year's Gathering isn't at Aspen, I thought Lucia might be fine with base Ikon. But if you are in Utah for parts of both that and Iron Blosam, then you get into the 7 day situation we are in and need the upgrade.

Ikon FAQs says "Ikon Base Pass holders get 5 days at Snowbird with blackouts, with no access to Alta Ski Area" seems like it would be a problem for people who prefer Alta or not sharing slopes with snowboarders or who find more skiing there that meets their ability or want the flexibility to ski both as needed. Not being able to go to Alta unless you have at least the Base Plus seems like it could be a problem for you and Liz on some days.

The Alta situation is probably the main reason we got full Ikons for next season. Since 2014 when either MCP or Ikon has been a combined AltaBird pass, about half of my LCC days have included time at both areas.

I bought the full (renewal) Ikons for both of us using the free 6x Affirm pay. I now have to decide on getting her Tahoe Value pass which gives us Heavenly 7 days a week except for holidays and Kirkwood and Northstar except for Saturdays and holidays. Her full price is $454 (my Senior version is $385). It's possible I could get hers reduced as "Pass Holders who use an Epic Coverage rollover credit to purchase their pass for the 2021/22 season and have an approved 2021/22 Epic Coverage refund request, credits will continue to rollover to the 2022/23 season", but it took a lot of calls/followup to get that done last Summer and Fall. It may have been even harder if credit card it was charged to hadn't changed.

I considered getting Lucia the pass insurance for $65 and have until 10/31 to decide on it. They don't pro-rate refund on how many days you have used pass, but based on how many days between 12/1/22 and 6/30/23 has passed.

Interruption for Season Passes

If the covered event occurs after December 1st, 2022, the reimbursement amount prorates daily from December 1st, 2022 through June 30, 2023. This is considered the Interruption period.

Here’s an example:

You purchase a Season Pass and add Pass Protection. Then a covered event occurs on January 22, 2023, and you file a claim. In this specific situation, the event occurred 25% through the interruption window, so you’d be eligible for a 75% reimbursement of the Season Pass purchase price.
