After being closed for all of May and June, Kirkwood has announced they will re-open for 4th of July weekend. Chairs one and two on Friday and Saturday, then chair six (Cornice high-speed quad) on Sunday. There are also rumors about Squaw re-opening.

Options, options, options...

Mammoth, Kirkwood and maybe Squaw. It's a bit far...and I can't be at 3 places at once.

Perhaps not skiing them in the same day, but Patrick has been known to drive a bit extensively just to check out other resorts :troll:

Untouched for 2 months at this time of year? I predict ubiquitous suncups. Recall tseeb's reports from Memorial weekend. If you want real skiing on July 4, stick with Mammoth.

Kirkwood would better serve its customers running a Snowbird-type schedule: Chair 6 + one of the lower chairs weekends only starting early May, as long as interest and snow hold out.

My wife and I were thinking about going to Kirkwood for the 3rd and returning on the 4th. They have Barbeque and Band on the afternoon/evening of the 3rd followed by fireworks. I fugured I could ski and my wife could sleep in, then go for a hike or ride the chairs to watch the race. I even called about room price and to make sure there was not a two or three night minimum. I was thinking about going until I received this update from Kirkwood today:

JULY 4TH SKIING/RIDING UPDATE!
Lift access for skiing/riding will be available this Fourth of July Weekend! Skiers/riders will access the snow of Thunder Saddle, the Wall, and Sentinel Bowl by hiking along ridges (over dirt) before descent. Hiking shoes are recommended. Be ready for expert terrain (obstacles will exist; no beginner or intermediate runs available). The ridge hike from the top of Chair 6 to the Wall is about 35 minutes. At snow's end, click out and walk 10 minutes back to the base of Chair 6. Sentinel Bowl is a 15 minute walk from the top of "6" with a 10 minute walk at the bottom. Round trip runs: 35 to 60 minutes.

I didn't go to the Sierras. Instead I went to Santa Cruz and Capitola on Fri/Sat. Friday's trip was not for pleasure as I attended service and wake for friend's 53 year-old sister who died of cancer about 10 days ago. Saturday was more fun as another friend and I left his truck at over 2,000 foot elevation in the Santa Cruz mountains and rode mountain bikes through the redwoods before descending to the coast on Buzzard's Lagoon road which is dirt on the top, before turning to pavement. The fog was just clearing and it only got into the low 70s at the coast compared to about 90 in San Jose. After eating Corralitos sausage at my friend's who I rode bikes with dad's beachhouse in Rio Del Mar, I rode and pushed my bike along the beach to Capitola where my wife and son met me. My other friend's wife, who is a chef in a Thai restuarant, made us a lunch feast and then we went to watch his brother play guitar at Zelda's on the beach in Capitola. We picked up the truck on the way home.
