Related but not specific to LCC/BCC. One of the local news org's is saying we're in the midst of La Nina effect - thus all the warmer & drier than usual weather in CO for the last month or so. I don't recall hearing/seeing that anywhere/time else this winter for explaining weather patterns. Did I just miss the memo or is this new news or false news or? Tony?
The current La Nina is mild vs. the quite strong one last year. February's weather has been a lot more like El Nino than La Nina. For a 2+ week stretch mid-month the Sierra was pounded, SoCal got 6 feet and western Canada was bone dry. The strong Sierra storm tracks usually hit the Wasatch too, but sometimes they peter out by the time they get to Colorado. The warm-up started about a week ago.
Even in the strong El Nino/La Nina years the effects tend to be intermittent, clearly showing up in season totals but not useful as a short term predictor. Currently the storm track is moving back to the north where one would expect it to be in a La Nina year. But so far this season the areas farther south have been doing much better.
