1 week vaca, 5 areas, all late , so it's brief:
loon on monday, incredible bulletproof and hardpack all over... this place is a horror show after the weekend and was really scrapped off... nothing they can do though when half of metro boston skis it in a 48hour period... looks like they are done blowing snow...100% open
cannon on tuesday: SWEET MOTHER OF MERCY!!!!! awoke to having no front stairs and a barely visible outback MOTOR VEHICLE!!!! QUITE SIMPLY THE SICKEST DAY EVER SKIING... loon had a legit 25 inches, so buddy gil and i , having a hunch school was not in session for the kids, made the big dig out and went to cannon 15 min up the road>>>>CANNON MOUNTAIN HAD A LEGIT 35 INCHES OF fresh SNOW AT THE SUMMIT, IT WAS THE BEST DAY IVE EVER HAD ...ALL OF THEIR MOGULS WERE GONE BECAUSE OF THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF SNOW THEY RECEIVED...skied waist deep powder all day long with very good visibility on the lower half of mountain. hardscrabble bumper was in sick shape...CAUGHT SOME SICK BIRD TELE SKIERS POACHING OVER AT MITTERSILL AND CLAIMS OF 60 INCH DRIFTS WERE ABOUNDING most time spent on front face four riding the triple.100% open
burke on wednesday: a very very good day, not as much snow but they got their 15... so the bump runs were well covered... buttermilk packed pow elsewhere...not a soul around to speak of... big negative however is their apparent refusal to run the 10 minute faster poma lift when BMA IS NOT THERE... what is the deal burke?... very cold and windy up top... 100% open
wildcat on thursday: WILDCAT MOUNTAIN CLOSED FOR 2 CONSECUTIVE DAYS AFTER THE BIG ONE... THEY WERE CALLING IT 36 FROM TUESDAY AND UP TO 45 IN SOME SPOTS.... no skiing on the 36 plus of fresh for over 48 hours produced fresh tracks all over but with a packed down firmness combined with a thin windskin that made it challenging for those of us who are not yet 100% legit in technique.... boarders were in heaven... i was hoping for more boarders to ski down the rowdy lift lines of the cat to cut up the skin a little...most people stuck to the smashed however... sick day #2... 100% open>
cranmore on friday: intended to ski the cat again but arrival in parking lot found small bits of ice and sleet being puked up by the sky and high high winds... figured the pre-paid 40 ticket would be put to use at a better later date, and drove into town to ski cranny for the donut on the loon season pass.... made about 7 runs on the flats and in the now rain, and bailed out about noon time after one epic and wild week... wheeeew
!!!!!!
postscript:
stayed up north through today and saw a 10 hour warming period with lots of rain at lincoln on friday followed by a dramatic plunge in temps... i would guess everyone has frozen gran right now as i do not think anyone survived teh wet precip that fell during the warm up... all the fresh is gone , but probably still some packed down to the base...it's days similiar to tuesday ( i've never had one that equaled it ) that keep me going in this thing called skiing and make me say that someday, hoepfully, i will actually figure out the secrets to this puzzle of skiing technique that seems to baffle me so much.
