sounds like it's the same everywhere... buddy gil and i hit loon on monday... it was cold, it was fine frozen granular and there was not a bump run on the mountain.. i can't get to riled up over that though cause it sounds like there is not a skiable bump run anywhere in new england... however, while sitting in loon's quad base lodge stewing about having no bumps to ski, my buddy gil and i noticed that the joint was crowded, but it was not a busy day!!! huh? what? what the hell's he talking about?... well , this is what we were talking about... it was a midweek monday, the day after the game... and it was crowded.. it'snot supposed to be crowded, but it was..and it was chaos and chaotic... it wasn't crowded like a saturday i suppose , but it was looney ville crowded... every abc'er from the commonwealth of mass goes to this place... it's got mellow enough blues for the true intermediates and a few somewhat steeps for the 8 times a year frauds on thier x screams who think they know how to ski and like to go really really fast, like picabo ( more on her later, that shill is off my christmas card list!!!! ) to summarize this rambling sermon , my buddy gil and i have cracked... we have a season condo across from loon but we just can't take it anymore.. loon gets no snow,, it's frozen gran all the time on top of wicked hardpack and has no real bump runs... it's too crowded with bad skiers and even worse snowboarders who think the key to skiing is just go faster!!!... i've been hit by 6 boarders in 5 years at loon... my buddy's been hit 4... loon does about 12,000 skiers a weekend and then tries to fix the carnage by turning on every snow gun on the mountain all day on mon and tues,,, except on the trails where the 16 race teams have taken over for the rest of the week... it's all over, we are getting a divorce.. jsut can't take it anymore.... it's still there as an option but no more unless an emergency ...no more short money season pass... so we went to bretton woods on tuesday... gil had raved about the place back in early december.... perspective is important here... i wish i lived in jay or stowe , but i don't.. i ski every week and can't drive to those places every week... all i care about is learning to ski bumps...and ski them well.. so what i want is medium pitched flats for practivce turns and mediums pitched bumps to learn on... .. i was none to happy about paying 50 bucks to ski bretton , however... skiing 50 plus days a year, i cannot do paying out 50 a day for a lift ticket... but i was going that day becasue we cracked and had to get away from loon... to make this woeful tale even longer, we got bretton, found out it was legit packed powder ( grommers only, bretton is like every where else it has a 3 inch crust off piste, but the snow difference was remarkable... the tree runs and gil's claim that they let a significant number of sides of trails bump up, seemed remarkable... we agonized for about 60 minutes and broke down.. we bought a season mid week pass to bretton and cannon for $199. there was nothing to ski but flats, but it was good , very , good packed powder, in fact there was 3 inches of fresh... that certainly did not make any trees skiable and they also had to smash every bump, but it will change, because they will get snow.. they get more... the crowds were amazing.. there weren't any.. the place definitely does business on sat and sun.. but mid week it appears it's nothing but old timer retirees chillin in the lodge and skiing a few turns. it was so... peaceful, calm and serenity abounded... it ain't stowe , or jay, but damn it it ain't loon either... it's the anti loon.. no hardpack.. no yahoo out of control boarders, no race teams , no tour buses of weekend warriors from ski-market bus tour inc. ruining the bumps lines ... bretton , i think is the new home..25 minutes from the condo and an easy drive with cannon the call on the powder days... if i hit the lottery i'll divorce again and marry stowe or jay... but for now , for what i need and want and am trying to do with my skiing, cannon and bretton are going to get it done... loon mtn, god love em, can kiss my you know what. see ya next week for 4 ( couple vac days ) probably bretton, bretton again, cannon and maybe burke...
p.s, has anyone seen that ridiculous picabo street volkl ski commercial in which picabo, among other absurd statements says " my volkl's do 90% of the work for me"!!!!!ahhhhrrrggg... talk about a sellout fraud.. i thought some of skiing was about paying your dues!!! hope i don't sound like a whinning snob with the above rant, but we just can't take it anymore!!!!!!

loon sucks. i have said it many times before. i could never understand why all the massholes go there. but honestly its a good place for them. so drive ten minutes up the road to cannon. better terrain, better snow, no crowds, much cheaper. just dont let too many people in on the secret.

joegm, i feel your pain. loon's terrain isn't 'that' bad, but their crowds make the mountain no fun. i too have just recently begun a bump learning program, so i can relate to that.

how is bretton woods in regards to their 'expert' terrain? i have wanted to try them out for a while, but i'll have a hard time justifying $50+ for poor expert terrain. i figured with their expansion, their new expert peak might make it worth the money. how does their expert peak ski?

btw, anonymous, not all people who come from MA are ass holes. that's a very pretnetions attitude as ass holes are everywhere, even in NH, VT, ME, etc. i hail from MA and am at home at places like cannon, wildcat, black, burke, magic, etc. i'm sure lot's of NH's feel loon is the perfect place for them too. please don't judge based on place of residence; cause who are you to judge?

Loon - I stopped going to loon about 15 years ago when they begin closing the mt. at 8:30 in the am to limit the crowds (the limit is still too high.) It was the crowds that drove me away. It has some great terrain, but there is now way to push it and a good skier to the max with human landmines (read: beginners with attitude over their heads) everywhere. Probably the only way to get a good ski day there is to arrive the night before a big dump, when the weather conditions inhibit driving.

I've spent many, many days at Cannon since then, probably always will for all the reasons stated in my other posts.

Bretton Woods - Expert terrain? Naaah. Their old moniker was "No Stress Skiing" and it still prevails. I spent 3 days their with my young family last year. About the only challenge is in the new glades section.

you are absolutely correct about bretton's expert terrain... you can't say it stinks becasue there is none to stink... it's a bad choice if steeps are what you need and or want... i am going to start going there to work on burning turns correctly on real packed powder so someday i will not have to kid myself and real be able to get full value when i go to stowe and have to pay $60 for a ticket, know what i mean? , so for now it's gonna get it done for me... and it really is dead on the weekdays... i'm willing to give up rad terrain for now in order to dump the idiots from loon
