Sunday morning was cloudy and gray in town, and we were surprised to find that the sun was out when we arrived at Lost Trail. E wanted to pick up a Lost Trail Powder Mountain baseball cap, and since it was the last day the ski area would be open and clothing was 20% off, it seemed like the time was right. By the time we?d finished poking around the base (~30 minutes) and had driven over to the Chair 3 side of the parking lot, clouds had come in to block the sun. Although there wasn?t any precipitation, the lack of sun made things a bit less cheery.
We?d had good luck with Ty?s runs on Chair 5 the previous Sunday, so we went for a similar setup this time. The biggest difference from last week (when it was snowing) was the skiing surface we encountered. Saturday?s sun had warmed up the snow and made it a pleasant surface (at the time), but Sunday?s cooler temperature and lack of sun had now left the surface very firm. In several areas, small cookies had been churned up by the groomers, and they rattled us around. We did our best to avoid them. Although Ty may have been oblivious to the surface conditions, avoiding the biggest cookies did make it easier on mom and dad. On one run E used the H-Bar with Ty, and on the next, we each held one of his hands and he skied between us. Much of the time we were only applying the lightest of grip so he could work on his balance, and he did really well. I actually let go of Ty?s hand a few times, but if he caught one of the rough patches of snow, he would lose his balance and end up dangling from Mom?s hand. I?d help correct him and we?d continue down the slope.
E was tired after a couple of runs working with Ty, so we decided to call it a day at that. Ty hadn?t gotten as much vertical as the previous week, but it was still a good session. From here on out, we?ll probably be hiking at Lost Trail for turns with Ty. Big Sky and Moonlight Basin are supposed to be open next weekend, but that might be the end of lift-served skiing for the season in Montana. Saturday definitely seemed like the pick of the weekend for skiing at Lost Trail, unless the sun came out strong after we left on Sunday and softened up the slopes. The way the weather has been lately, and with more precipitation in the forecast, the slopes at Lost Trail should be in good shape for several weeks to come.
