Day 6: Uphill
I'm prep'ing my fitness a bit and testing out various gear ahead of a trip coming up in 10 days. So today was all about the uphill, not the downhill. Sunny on the plains with a NW flow adding in light flurries and snow up at Loveland. Temps were chilly prob ~20F but with very light wind in the trees but a strong enough breeze above treeline to require re-zipping up all my layers even while going uphill. Loveland has 2 routes uphill and one of them wasn't open (all the way to Chair 9). So partly in conjunction with my neighbor I headed all the way up to the top of Chair 2; or about 2 miles and 1,120 verts.
My need was to practice skinning and get a big aerobic day in, his focus was on practicing the downhill as much as anything as he has only been skiing for a year or so. So he only went to the Chair 2 mid-unload/load station. It took me something less than 2 hours to go all the way up from sometime after 9 to almost exactly 11am when I had a quick snack at the hut at the top of 2. My only run was down one of the 'south chutes' and then the flats back to the base. Definitely different to be going up and not down at a ski resort. Also definitely doable.
On the way back we got to see a rolled tractor trailer on I70 at Georgetown clogging the westbound lanes for miles. And just to make it a 2 sport day since we left just before noon, I took my son for a bike ride in the warm 50F+ temps down on the flatlands.
