I went skiing yesterday. I needed it, Winter needed it and we finally got outside to play. The girl had been cooped up in the house for months on end and when she saw me move my skis near the door; she knew what was up. She spazzed out like usual and the old routine played itself out. Soon, she?d be running down a snowy mountain in a state of bliss and she knew it. Just like riding a bike.

Snow has fallen here often lately and with the recent 18? dump on Loveland Pass, the base was blanketed with enough goodness to make conditions very, very nice.

Boot top, semi-tracked powder on the upper snowfields. Not bad for October 19th. I took a few turns in the trees a bit lower and found thin cover, but the funneling gullies held an excellent cover of creamy, packed powder all the way to their ends. Winter was in all her glory.

I befriended a snow-shoer who saw me taking photos and she kindly offered to snap off a couple of me. She wound up taking a video, which turned out nicely, but she forgot to shut the camera off and it became a 30-second clip containing five seconds of skiing and the rest is me standing stopped with my dog running in circles. It was quite nice to get outside and make some turns on such a beautiful afternoon. A pretty cool season-opener. And the forecast is looking good for the days to come...

Those who have been around here awhile know Mapadu. Welcome back! Thanks for posting that here, bud...the first No-Bull Ski Report of the new season, and the first on the new boards. They're now officially "christened!"

Thanks Matt !

What a nice first report on a bulletin board

Did you take some pics of the open terrain ? I would like to know how it was... even though I would have skied the same terrain as you, if I'd been there ;)

Loveland Pass is neither open nor closed -- it's the backcountry adjacent to Loveland Ski Area.

Oops, sorry for the mistake ;)

I read too fast + didn't know this place...

I thought Matt was skiing in the closed trails beside Mambo/Homerun

Loveland Pass reaches 11,992 ft. on U.S. 6 between Loveland and A-Basin ski areas. There is a parking lot at the top, likely intended for scenic viewing from the Continental Divide. In December 1995 we flew to Denver and drove up to our Keystone condo for the week before Christmas, arriving about 2PM. I didn't want to buy a lift ticket at that hour, so I drove to Loveland Pass, parked and took 3 road-shuttle runs of 700 vertical each, thumbing my way back to the top of the pass. It gets a fair amount of activity. Two of the runs were completely skier-packed and there was very little wait to hitch rides back up.
