A really nice day at Mad River today. This was my first powder day at Mad River and it was super sweet. Total of the storm through leaving the parking lot this afternoon was about 16" or so. Some upper mountain trails fared poorly during the rain storm and showed tops of moguls in a sad frozen looking state. In a matter of fact, I side cutted around the Waterfall on Paradise because getting down the main line just looked particularly unfriendly. But for the most part, everything filled in nicely with the best snow (of course) in the trees.

My morning started off just peachy. After a 5:30a alarm to account for slower then normal travel times, I went out to warm up my car only to find the drive had yet to be plowed. After a pathetic attempt at getting up the drive way with almost a foot of snow on the ground, I proceeded to shovel out a lane for one of my tires doing the bare minimum work to allow my car access to the road. After half an hour and a couple of attempts, I finally whaled my car up the hill, around the corner, and onto the road. Road conditions sucked real bad heading out of StJ on Route 2 but were better after getting through Danville. Made it to the parking lot only 10-15 minutes late and the initial line for the single was still working its way up, so I didn't miss much!

Untracked snow got chewed up pretty quick. Hard hunting for untracked when everyone knows where to go. But occasional untracked pockets were found throughout the early to late afternoon and snow quality was primo even when not untracked. I remarked early in the morning that the snow quality had a calming effect rather than the pumped up feeling I get from blower type snow. It was easy to build up speed too quickly and I found myself checking speed often early in the day as I adjusted but had the hang of the snow by early afternoon.

Just an absolutely nice and fun day all around. It is unfortunate we had the rain event as I occasionally sunk down to the scratchy base and some lines revealed less than the ideal base that existed last week. We will see how much lifted snow gets deposited by tomorrow morning, certainly no freshies left over from today's snow, but ideally we have just stamped down a new top level base layer of excellent quality.

Oh yea, after much consideration, I bought a share today.

Whenever a small ski area is on the verge of going under, people always bring up the "let's turn it into a co-op like Mad River" solution. It always sounds nice, but I wonder just how tough it is to make things work like they allegedly do at MRG.

As a frequenter of NELSAP, I must say I dislike the notion that ski areas should never go under. As much as it sucks when a local favorite bites the dust, there is almost always a good reason for it happening. The sad ones are when it is the result of poor management at a decent area. Most decent areas do come back though if there is a profit to be made.

But it is not comparable to Mad River Glen which never was on the verge of going under, but rather was sold to a co-op instead of a corporation, group of investors, or an individual. Greylock Glen is the only thing comparable that I can think of and I am not sure how they do it. There are a few other locally town owned and volunteer efforts such as Lyndon Outing Club that put together the local effort for the local families and kids.

With Mad River, I love the mountain, the terrain, and the Single and don't want the place to change so I put my money where my mouth is. Can't think of many other mountains I would do that for, big or small, so I think a co-op solution for a small mountain on the verge of going the route of the lost would be a tough proposition.

That's exactely why I did it back in 1998.

I was tired of seeing all my favorite (or ex-fav) places changed in the negative way. Places like Tremblant, Jay, Stowe, Smuggs, Whiteface, Cannon, Killington among others.

calming effect, but checking your speed....c'mon man the stuff was light

A little late, but I am sure the addition of some action shots during the week will be a welcome sight to FTO readers even if it is almost two weeks ago. Based on the difference of conditions between then and now (only ten days!), it might as well feel like months ago.
