We arrived in mammoth on friday night for the annual family reunion to a light snow and some wind. snowed pretty good that night but only about an inch on the ground when we hit the hay. we woke up to about 3 inches in town and walked to canyon lodge. first tracks on some intermediate runs near the base with the rest of the family then of the face of 22 where there was about knee deep snow. considerably more snow above about 9500 feet. did avi chutes a couple of times. the top opened at what seemed the stormiest part of the day where it was snowing moderately so we decided on that for tomorrow. we woke up now to about an inch new and some icy high speed runs down clover to start the day. than down face of 22. five had some nice powder. 3 had some nice windblown and then i left the group at the top of 9 and traversed to dragons back. up 9 to upper gondi and down the backside to hike up hemlock ridge for the first time and it was deep and steep. then i believe i spotted mr. crocker. bottom of 14 i was about 10 chairs behind him. so tony how did the gullies under 14 go? crazy man ducking closed ropes. [-X interesting. than down scotty's, up 23 down wipeout chutes down to 1. over to 3 down china bowl and waterfall all the way back to canyon to meet back up with the family. interesting and fun day. how we forgot the camera im not sure. but no pix, sorry guys.

I saw 2 skiers in Dos Passos under chair 14 while I was riding up. It's quite rare for that run to be passable, that was maybe my 3rd time in there in 32 seasons of skiing Mammoth. I did get yelled at by the top liftie at 14  , no doubt ski-the-face heard that too. The crux is very bony, but it's intermediate pitch and I had seen the other 2 guys navigate hard skiers' left to get past it. I took lower Roadrunner around to 12 just in case the liftie had called down to the bottom of 13 & 14. You can get in there undetected if you hike up Paranoid first, but I was too tired for that after 50K+ since Friday morning.

Here's the chair 14 view of the rocky part of Dos Passos.

oh yes. "TUCK, TUCK!" and "HEY MAN THERES A CLOSED SIGN THERE!" =D> I saw Dos Pasos on a retro trail map back in december while in mammoth. never seen it that filled in.
