Mammoth 5/5-6

Finally, some real spring conditions.

The snow down at the Mill wasn't really freezing at night, so with the salting and perfect grooming, Stump Alley was perfect all morning. Also, with the decent winds, the bottom runs stayed fine the entire day. The snow never really got sticky. On both days, Solitude (no lift access, but easily accessible) had really nice corn around 10:30. I must have lapped Solitude to Lost in the Woods (completely untracked corn) at least 10 times during these two days.

Around 11:30, I started to ski the top. Sign Line on Climax was actually a bit too heavy. The snow was really unconsolidated and could use more skier traffic. Huevos, on the other hand, was as good as it gets. Soft bumps at the top and perfect smooth bumps below. The Paranoids were really nice on the upper half, but the bottom was starting to develop some small sun cups. Not really a problem on the Lhasas, but once again, more skier traffic is needed.

Philippe's was perhaps the best run on Wednesday. It stayed a bit firmer than everything else, so when the rest of the top was getting heavy around 2:30, Philippe's was prime. Great soft snow all the way down, and the chute is unbelievable wide for this time of year.

Mammoth is also building some huge jumps right now. There were a few off in the Chair 14 area and this big one at the bottom of White Bark Bowl.

The White Bark jump was there when I was last at Mammoth April 21-22, first time I've even seen one there. I did not look at Philippe's as I was not willing to try that (like Varmint's Nest) on the AT demos. I hope these runs will still be skiable Memorial weekend, but I don't think odds are that great.

The best corn days at Mammoth are like that.
