In 2019, I had a 62 day break starting on April 29 before skiing Mammoth July 1-3. In 2023, my break was 74 days (2 months and 2 weeks) after skiing Kirkwood on May 12. I’d hoped to go again sooner and get to 50 days for season but was busy with other trips including taking camper to New Brighton Beach (late May), New Hogan Reservoir/Calaveras Big Trees (late June) and Paso Robles/Morro Bay (last week) and an 8 day trip to So. Tahoe cabin in mid-July.

A friend had an extra ticket to Neil Young on 7/24 at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena in So. Tahoe and that motivated me to go skiing again. After Mon night concert, I drove from SLT to Mammoth Tues. PM getting through the couple of long one-lane construction zones on 395 without delay, then stopped at June Lake Brewing for a beer and sort hikes to Gull and June Lakes before buying a 4-pack to go.

I loaded chair 1 at 740 and would not return to the base until noon. Broadway and the park early.

I didn’t see anyone skiing from upper gondola so I went to chair 23 which I rode 17 times including 12 in a row

before moving to upper gondola about 10. Cornice was OK early, but got mostly too soft as it was skied. Snowcats had pushed snow to make narrow entrance into big bumps at top of Drop Out that I skied from the top a couple of times.

Many were continuing towards bottom close to chair, but I never did as path seemed too narrow, rocky and busy for me.

I skied what I thought was a better route to skiers right. I also found good snow along edge of what is probably Drop Out 3 although getting to where it was smooth next to rocks required traversing over a big steep bump or two. There was also a traverse to right of Cornice into the apron of Hangman’s where they were a few skiable lines that had decent snow that I did a few times.

I moved to upper gondola and skied Climax twice, trying both of the two narrow chokes getting out. I hit a rock hard in narrower one to skiers right when I was skiing it more cleanly than I did wider one on previous run. The racers were done so I used chair 3 to ski Saddle Bowl five times (including once on 2nd exit from Climax).

I moved back to chair 23 and skied route a few times that included Drop Out 3, bumps below it, then more smooth snow before a traverse into fast snow racers left on Gremlins. I also skied traverse towards below Hangmans twice, once turning early and skiing smooth line below Varmits. I finished with another lap on chair 3 skiing still fast Saddle Bowl and found a rock on a thin area in Broadway.

I quit at noon with 27K. My day was not over as after a lunch break at camper I got $15 shuttle ticket for Rainbow Fall/Red’s Meadow. I’d seen a full shuttle leaving at noon, then the next one after 1245 did not take standees or handle the line waiting so I got on one about 130. The hike to Devils Postpile was not recommended as they said it was 5 miles due to some closures including bus stop 6 so I got out at stop 9 and did the 1.3 miles downhill to Rainbow Falls and found the 1.5 miles uphill to pickup at stop 10 was enough.

I thought I was going to have to stand on return but a young lady offered me her seat and moved to the back where she found another. When I got back to Main Lodge, snowcats were pushing snow from park onto thin areas of Broadway.

I started with gondola about 745 after rubbing on some North Forged by Swix wax that I also reapplied before my last run. I skied Cornice twice early barely getting through thin area about halfway there. Later sign at top of Gondola said “Walking Required to Access Cornice Bowl”.

I moved to chair 23 that I would ride 15 times. There was wind early in the parking lot and it was strong my last rides going up the big rocks before tower 6. I had two long stoppages; first one was more than 5 minutes and second one 10 minutes. I don’t think they were from wind. The race courses started higher on skiers left of Cornice and did not include skiers left of Saddle Bowl as they did on Wed. Someone posted this picture on SkiTalk but I didn’t notice her.

I found and skied a couple of more routes between Cornice and apron below Hangman’s and even one a little further than previous day. Next picture was taken at 1015 when they'd opened route on right to public.

My more adventuresome runs were a 10 AM run on skiers left choke of Climax, once downclimbing into top of Drop Out as they did not push any more snow into it and it looked rocky and my last run of the season just after noon down skiers right choke of Climax. I counted 23K.

I drove home via Tioga Pass which opened the previous Saturday, the latest ever. I stopped at Mono Mobil at the base but it was way too busy to try to order food or even get much of a cell signal and Internet site I wanted to see at 130 was having problems. I stopped by windy Ellery Lake and saw two skiers on Ellery Bowl. (excuse the power lines)

I also stopped at Tenaya Lake where I thought about jumping in. I only had a very short delay for the one lane section between there and Olmstead Point. That is Cloud’s Rest to left, the highest point visible from Yosemite Valley.

I hiked it once and found it challenging with a shoes off crossing of Tenaya Lake’s outlet creek to begin, many miles on trail with a couple of inches of new snow and knife edge ridge at end to get to the top.

Getting thin in a bunch of areas, esp down bottom. Plenty of snow and good steeps though for the upper mtn nearly at August. I still have little interest in skiing in those temps though. Rather hike, MTB, Kayak, or etc...

Here is the only available non-hike skiing over this way. I assume the park rats were probably out during the morning. Either that or they are only doing weekdays now for Woodward at Copper. Snow getting quite dirty...

Yesterday was last day for chair 1 and skiing Broadway down to Mammoth's Main Lodge. It sounds like Mikaela is still there.

I'm adding a picture of the four routes I skied below Hangman's using traverse from near the current top of Cornice Bowl. I mostly was skiing these later in the morning, then cutting into where racers had left. Skier is on main route and there is a narrow one to the left that I only took once and a couple of more to lookers right.

Beer purchased on recent trips to Paso Robles and Mammoth (and SLT). June Lake beers were $8 each whether bought there on tap (plus tip) or for canned pint to go, but tax was included and if you bought a 4-pack one was free so only $24. I didn't realize the Citra Solo I bought at Mammoth Brewing (where I watched 2nd US Women's World Cup between my ski days) was from Lead Dog, their new Reno partner. The Cali Squeeze Blood Orange and Firestone No Vacancy were both bought at huge brewery next to 101 S of Paso where we watched the first US Women's World Cup. The blood orange added a lot of color and flavor to the beer. The No Vacancy is a collaboration between with a Monterey brewery than added a brewery and taproom not far from where my son was living in Salins. The Double Mind Haze is one I've never tried before and was bought at SLT Safeway ($3?). I like the regular Mind Haze.

I just noticed that. Climax is listed still open but I question for how long. I never skied those traverses looker's left of Cornice on July 19, but I'm sure I will later this week. I had nice runs on Scotty's and Drop Out 1 then, but what's left of them now is not worth the grunt work IMHO.

Climax closed today, so 5 runs left for the final week (with variations): Cornice, Drop Out 3, Upper St. Anton, Gremlin's and Saddle Bowl. There are a couple of narrow spots in Drop Out 3 that look good now but might get squeezed later this week.

West Bowl is listed open but Face of 3 access to it has been closed for 2 weeks. Sometimes you can get there from Saddle Bowl, but if so it surely requires walking over rocks now. The cams have not shown anyone skiing there recently.

So as I expected, skiing is more limited than on the two days we skied during this week in 2017.
