Mammoth early April

Hey,
I guess Tony would be the most apt to answer this question, but any comments are welcome.

Thinking about mammoth for about a week in early april.
What would the conditions be like...
Given that htey seem to be having a bunch of snow this winter, will there be good coverage then?

Also, what are the chances that we'd get r@!n, or other unpredictable weather.

and finaly, if i make the trip, what would some contingency plans be if the weather goes to sh*t (other than june mountain).
Thanks

It can be argued that early April is the best time of year at Mammoth. The base is deep, the upper mountain steeps are still usually dry winter snow, sunny groomers have great corn, and the incidence of big storms starts to drop.

The current base of 14-16 feet isn't going anywhere. They have already announced operation "well into June" and should stay open through July 4 unless the spring is unseasonably warm.

It does not rain at Mammoth (historical incidence less than one day per ski season) due to 9,000+ elevation of 80% of ski terrain. The only weather downside is big storms that close the upper (and sometimes mid) mountain chairs for wind, visibility or avalanche danger. The 45 minute drive to June Mt. is worthwhile if the storm is severe enough to close mid mountain chairs 3, 5 and 22. Not much in the way of other alternative activities in Mammoth. There is very good cross country skiing up at the lakes, also at close to 9,000 feet. Death Valley is about 200 miles away, and is a common retreat for locals that get cabin fever during extended storms.

And you can get powder. My career powder day was at Mammoth April 9, 1999: http://www.skisocal.org/cgi/ski.pl/detail/144;98-99

Great.
That is *very* encouraging news, especially since western Canada hasn't had a great season by any standards....

I'll probably be booking soon.

Lodging in June may cost half of what it does in April. Lift tickets will be $50 instead of $60.

I wanted to high-ball the cost Tony. Actually, I more curious about Travel aspect of his trip which should be pretty close to mine if he flies out from Toronto.
