There was some optimism on the Mammoth Forum that the Memorial closing this year would be better than 2007 with similar total snowfall as March was the best snow month in 2012 while March was warm and dry in 2007. I shared that feeling but suggested a possible opposing view that the manmade base of 2007 might be more durable than this year's which got trashed over Christmas despite being rebuilt by the late season natural snow. That opposing view unfortunately turned out to be correct. This report can be compared to Memorial weekend 2007 here: viewtopic.php?t=3217

There were 4 WROD's to Main Lodge in 2007; now there are two, Broadway and the remnants of the Unbound terrain park. Both are narrow for a greater length now than in 2007 as seen in this intersection on upper Broadway.

After exiting chair 1 this strip leading to the base of chair 23 was closed today.
IMGP2620.JPG

Chair 23 did not run due to weather. A small front is moving in that dropped temps into the low 30's in the morning and flurries began by noon. Cornice and face of 3 were hard frozen granular, so Liz' eastern background served her well today. Many SoCal skiers would have blown it off after a couple of runs. So it's understandable Mammoth did not run 23 for access to ungroomed steeps. Here's the current view of 23:
IMGP2622.JPG

Coverage is similar to 2007, but the entry to Drop Out from the top is more constrained this year.

That strip going to 23 would have been open in 2007 because Powder Bowl was still open. This year all the race course runs are done.

Similarly Gremlin's was closed today because it would also lead to the base of 23.

A few pics while riding the upper gondola. First looking down chair 3 to mid-station and the snowmaking reservoir.

Toward Lincoln Mountain.

It looks like they built a halfpipe on Solitude, probably for a competition as I don't recall chair 5 running after Canyon closed April 22.

Climax:
IMGP2636.JPG

This is the only area of the mountain with better cover than 2007. If it's warm later in the weekend, laps from Climax to Saddle Bowl will have the best skiing. Patrick would be proud that I actually skied Climax under crunchy eastern conditions today. It was not frozen as hard as Cornice and face of 3 but of course it wasn't smooth either.

Liz took a second lap on Cornice while I was on Climax.

The face of 3 is substantially thinner than in 2007.

The silver lining today was that Mammoth was deserted. Thus you could get a good rhythm of turns going on Saddle Bowl and Broadway and the snow remained supportable all morning and never deteriorated into mush or lost cover. This will not be the case with the weekend crowd. Saturday, if the top is closed for weather, will be a complete junk show on the 2 lower runs to Main Lodge. Nice weather is predicted to return for Sunday/Monday, so advanced skiers who can stay on the upper gondola will have good variety among Climax, Cornice and a few lines under Drop Out. I do not recommend Mammoth this weekend for intermediates as the very limited terrain is likely to have deteriorating snow and excessive skier density.

Under crunchy eastern conditions? Not sure what that means? Refrozen spring snow? I've skied on it in California, Alberta and British Columbia.

Or

- anyone that is thinking of finding great skiing with excellent coverage for late May.
- requiring a long trip to get there.

I'll get a report up for Sunday when I get home, but with sun the upper mountain was quite good with more variety than usual for a closing weekend, better than 2007. Dave McCoy would probably not have bothered keeping those lower WROD's open and just run upper lifts with gondola for transport.

Sunday (and presumably Monday) were worthwhile skiing for the local drive-ups, not for visitors from afar unless doing lots of other activities like we were.

I know it wasn't usual, but closing weekend (July 4) that I experienced in 2006 and 2010 were vastly superior to what I'm seeing here (mostly based on the pics).

What is Mammoth's (Rusty's) obsession with keeping the mountain open only on the condition that you ski to the Main Lodge. If you have good conditions up higher and demand warrants then what's the big deal with using the gondola for downloading and closing the lower slopes?

I really don't get it. The lower mountain looked like an utter waste of money and man power. Was Chair 6 even skiable?

I would think the scenic rides would more than cover the gondola operating costs from Memorial Day weekend on, so the only cost to ski is the additional lifts, trail maintenance and patrol. Seems like it wouldn't take a lot of interest to cover those costs and then some.

True. FYI July 4 weekend closings 2005 and 2011 were better than 2006 and 2010. Upper mountain this time was better only than May 31, 1981, July 4, 1986 and Memorial weekend 2007 in my closing/near closing experience. Part of this is due to running both the upper gondola and 23. In the 1980's Mammoth either did not have or did not run 23 and the snow would deteriorate faster in that area without skier packing.

That was an overstatement, probably because it exceeded expectations vs. Friday and 2007.

My guess is marketing some intermediate terrain, which presumably attracts day ticket revenue as opposed to just the fanatics with season passes. Considering the attitude of other late season areas, I'm quite pleased with Mammoth's overall attitude toward late season. The only erosion from the Dave McCoy era is that last year indicates lift served skiing post July 4 holiday as in 1983 and 1995 is probably dead. And I've heard they would have stayed open in 2011 if they could have attracted more race camps. I do not think the "Broadway rule" results in earlier closing, as evidenced by 2007 and this year.

I strongly suspect scenic rides would not cover the cost of additional lifts, trail maintenance and patrol. On a few other issues I do know that Mammoth management is very cautious about liability issues. Therefore they will try to maintain lift accessible terrain to a high standard, which does incur personnel and other costs. Many of us would be happy just to be allowed lift access and sign a Snowbird-type waiver acknowledging backcountry conditions, but it's not gonna happen. As evidenced by me being allowed to do that in 2005 but not last year even though they know me personally.
