Mammoth Mountain 11/27-30

You guys are going to have to give me a Mulligan on this post. I have no pics! I was in such a rush to leave town on Wednesday that I forgot the battery to my Sony camera. We loaded up my RV with Rob, Michelle and Shain Halderman and my wife Debbie and younger son Spenny.
We made the long 11 hour drive to Mammoth as we are in the dreaded Rex block here in the PNW. There was fresh snow on the ground in the Village; it had just stopped snowing before our arrival.
Thursday dawned clear and we immediately made our way to the top. There was about 4-6 inches and Climax was good under the Pressure Frame. Debbie, Rob and I were boarding and we hit Dave's, Wipeout and Scotties. The coverage was impressive for Thanksgiving and my old Mammoth buddy Billy Gural told me he thinks there is more snow on the top than they had all last season.
Friday was bluebird and we broke out the groomer skis to do some carving. It was a little more crowded but usually it was ski on.
Saturday was the busy day but we always try and get out at 8:30. The adults were starting to get a little weary after two days of hard charging so we hung it up around 1:30. Mammoth never had any bars on the mountain in the old days when Dave McCoy ran the place. Not so any more, and I don't know if it's a good thing, but they sure were crowded.
Too bad the Beavers dropped the ball and let the Ducks kick their butts. I was hoping the mighty Trojans could skip the Rose Bowl and play someone good.
We were planning to leave Sunday morning early but the weather and groomers were so nice we decided to buck up for tickets and ski Sunday. It was really fun as I ran into Jimmy Morning, who is back coaching ski racing for the Race Department. Jimmy taught me how to ski back when I was a junior ski race rat back in the 60's. Mammoth has always had an outstanding ski racing culture and chances are they will be hosting races from all over the West if things don't turn around!

Sorry!

When Adam and I were there 2 weeks ago, the Squaw Valley kids' team was training. I'd be surprised if there weren't Tahoe teams there last weekend too.

Billy Gural told me he thinks there is more snow on the top than they had all last season.
That would be 2 years ago, 2006-07. There is far more snow up there now than in January or at the Memorial Day closing in 2007. They did get 100 inches in February 2007, so I suspect there was more snowpack than now for about a month of that season.

I looked for you Snowman. I figured I'd see you in your red plaid hat bellied up to the bar at Tusks.
