I remember that jean jacket but I can't remember ever being that young! Mike Schubert (schubwa), Lynette Armstrong and Mark Forney having a beer in the spring on the Main Lodge sundeck. Lynette and I worked that season down at the brand new Warming Hut at 7 & 8. We were probably up to free ski that day. These are digital photos of the original snapshots. I earned the nickname, "schubwa", on ski school and it stuck.

Terry Baucham of Whiskey Creek fame, Elise Waddell and Rhubarb (seated). Rhubarb Marcellin ran the repair shop forever. I worked with Terry down at Whiskey Creek at night as a waiter. During the day I taught skiing... whew, tough combo.

Looking on are Jane Hubbard, 70's groupie, Elise Waddell, Scotty B. and Mimi Stermer. We had so much fun in those days and life was so simple, you get up and ski, then party!

Jane Hubbard, in the foreground, in the "Yellow Jacket" lineup. They taught the kids and the "Blue Jackets" taught the adults. That didn't last long. I think the next season we all wore the same uniform. Boy, was it was busy! We'd have 200+ beginners on any given Saturday.

Ueli Leuti and Bam-Bam (Jeff Voorhies). Jeff was easily one of the most outlandish and colorful free skiers of that era. Probably Russ Larsen in the hat (he always wore). Later, Ueli worked for 15 years with the US Ski Team's Downhill group.

Fellows in the lineup: Roger Rilling, Garry Elliot, Peter McAssey , Russ Larsen (in the cowboy hat), Bill Altaffer ("Al Fu") and Scotty B.

Ueli setting up a finish. The next season the Race Department was started with Dennis Agee as director. Also on RD that first season was me, John Armstrong, Terry Smith, Ueli, Elise, Russ Larsen, Tracy Day, Linda Meyers, Dave Smith and Deb Chapman. Dennis and Phillipe Mollard coached on the US Team in 69-71. He then came back to head up the entire US Ski Team program in the mid-80's.

Dennis Agee (aka: Snow Buffalo) and Katy Morning. Katy's sister Robin was an Olympian from Mammoth and now lives with Ueli, who is running the Nordic School up at the Tamarack Lodge. Brother Jimmy Morning is coaching for the RD and taught me how to ski back in the Kratka Ridge days.

Down in Bishop for some tennis were Gus Weber (Ski School Director before Max Good), Monika (Egan) Miller, Rasma Thomas, Martine and Luke. All photos courtesy of Monika. Digitized by Lynette Armstrong (Thanks gals!)

Martine Claret-Tournier and Luke were among the visiting Swiss Ski Instructors we had each winter at Mammoth. They were always great skiers and added a wonderful international flair to our Ski School. Max Good recruited them from his native Switzerland. Max had taught the US Army's Tenth Mountain troops back in Colorado during WW2 how to ski.

From the left is a toasting Garry Elliot, Bill Altaffer, Chuck Curry, Jim Northrup, ?, and Jack Edgehill (looking down). The next winter I relocated up to the Main Lodge for the duration of my ski career in Mammoth.

DSC05627.jpg

Elise Waddell and the super-smooth Jim Northrup. Jim was one of my favorite guys on Ski School and always had spectacular girlfriends. Elise ran (the office for) the Race Department starting the next winter.

DSC05628.jpg

The ever handsome Howard Gray. Howard left the next season to run the Warming Hut at 7 & 8. Gary Berger, who hired me, came back up to the Main Lodge. Everybody loved Howard (RIP). He worked part time in Hollywood as an actor.

DSC05630.jpg

The Swissies. Jan Tischauser has his arm around Martine. He was a super skier and now oversees the FIS Audi Women's World Cup Circuit from back in Switzerland. Monika, before she married Bill Egan, looks on. Bill also went on to the US Ski Team and headed up the Men's Program.

Wow! I remember a lot of those faces and I was friends with Ueli from my days working at Pioneer Market. I then was on Cat Crew in the early 80's before heading back to my first love "Mt. Waterman".

Tom,

Do you remember the Kratka Ridge crew? Ray and Tommy Hensley's folks owned Kratka back then. Also Jimmy Morning, Dick Drum, Barbara Moore and daughter Tracy Day?

And some people say I post dated TRs and stuff.

Love old pics, keep them coming (if you have time).

Gus Weber was a ski instructor at Tremblant at probably the same time as my dad. I was never able to confirm that it was my dad in one 1952 Tremblant ski instructor pic. An old timer was able to identify most instructors on the picture expect 1 or 2. Hard to say, if it was him. I know my dad followed the snow around ski country, he moved around as instructor in the Laurentians and Eastern Townships from lower Laurentians(?), Tremblant(?) to Gray Rocks and eventually becoming ski school director at Villa Bellevue (Inn between GR and Tremblant) then ending up at Glen Mtn in the Townships.

I still know Ray, his mother, and sister, although don't see them anymore since not on the mountain anymore. I was good friends with his dad Ray who unfortunatly passed away a few years ago. The Hensley's and Lynn Newcomb were like arch rivals and a lot of bickering went on between Kratka & Waterman, but even though I worked for Lynn the Hensley's liked me I guess.

I know the Mourning name, but don't remember them. I learned to ski at Kratka in the arely 70's so I'm sure I came across all those people.

Did you know the Zois's who father ran the Beer Cellar back in those days. I'm still friends and in contact with Mike.

Tom,

Did you work with Alan Gaabo on Cat Crew? His sister (they were inseparable) worked in the front office with Pam Murphy and Rusty Gregory.

Sure did! I also worked with his sister in the business office one year. That job got me on the Cat Crew as I spent a lot of time in Dave and Nic's office. I remember watching the Super Bowl in their office the year the 49ers won with that miracle catch with John Garamendi who is now the Lt. Governor.

Rusty Gregory replaced Rick Tracy in Personell. I still run into Rick Tracy in Wrightwood every once in a while.

I worked with Terry down at Whiskey Creek at night as a waiter.
Any of you know Lance Meyer? He lived in Mammoth from 1974-1985. He was a ski instructor much of that time and was a waiter at Whiskey Creek when I first met him in 1978. He lived in an A-frame that his parents owned on Davison Rd. at the T intersection of the Timber Ridge Road (since sold and torn down). How did I meet such a person in my formative ski years? His mother was a teammate at a national bridge tournament event we won in 1977. It turned out also that Lance's father was the cardiologist who did my father's bypass surgery in 1974.

and always had spectacular girlfriends.
Lance did quite well in that department also.

Tom, Sorry to rain on your memories, but John Garamendi, who is Lt. Governor of CA, did not play for the 49ers. He was a 2nd team All-American guard at Cal and the 1964 West Coast heavyweight wrestling champion.

It was John Taylor who had the TD catch to end the drive of the decade in Jan 1989 to beat the Benglas 20-16.

No! John Garamendi was in the office with Dave, Nic, Tony Romo, Don Rake (?), and myself. I didn't mean he caught the pass.....lol

And with a little research, "The Catch" was by Dwight Clark in 1982.

Of course I knew Lance Meyer! He was a ladies man for sure. I remember him for being soft spoken, a great athlete and all around great guy.

I think I met him my first winter in Mammoth (71-72). He was a lift op with long hair (he had to wear a long-hair wig); to work for Mammoth you needed short hair and no facial hair. He was friends with Jeff Cure, who lived in Marty Darby's house just up the street on Davidson from Lance's. That 's the big (in those days) three story job up there.

We worked together for years at Whiskey Creek. I remember he left to persue a career as a Chiropractor and studied in the Bay Area. Haven't heard of him in years.

Cool to see old pictures of Ueli. I just said bye to him about 15 minutes ago as he left Tamarack. Ueli is an awesome guy to work with and is very giving.

Tom, The Catch with Dwight Clark was not in the Super Bowl. It was Jan 10, 1982 NFC Championship Game with Dallas. Would John Garamendi have vetoed a bill with an F--- You as Arnold did this week?

I'm bad, your right it was NFC game with Dallas. I put a search into Google with 49er Super Bowl History and The Catch came up. Guess I should have read whole story (it was too long ago to remember). But I do remember everyone in Dave's office watching that game.

I love your photos. I am younger and was there those years learning to be a better skier. I looked up to all those folks soooooooooooooooooooo much! I just remember the deck and the sunbathing as so popular then.....! It was awesome, my school mates, and these older people who could really ski well!

FYI if you have any ski memorabillia that no one would buy, perhaps it could be a tax write off. National Ski Patrol is having a fundraising auction, all online. Below is the info copied and pasted! Perhaps even your photos would be a retro treat to many! O:)

Fundraising Online Auction Nov 26 - Dec 9 (09.18.09)

NSP is hosting its first ever online auction - similar to a silent auction, but in web format and open to the public as well as NSP members. The auction will be available for preview on October 26th and bidding will be open from November 26th - December 9th. We are looking to the membership to help make this fundraiser a success. If you have any piece of unique ski memorabilia, a company with good or services, or if your patrol has a resort patch that you'd like to donate to the auction, please contact Christine Gouwens at cgouwens@nsp.org or 303-988-1111 ext.2629 for further information. All donors will have their logo displayed on the auction homepage to acknowledge support in NSP's fundraising effort. We need your help to make this a success!

Looks like i'm over a year late to see and respond to this post. I have to tell you, in made me very nostalgic see all of those familiar faces. Sometimes it seems like yesterday and other times like another life. I sones still have "Mammoth Dreams" where I am all of a sudden teaching skiing again. Usually I don't want to be there at this time in my life although it was some of the best years of my life!

Will anyone see this post? How are you Mike, if you see this? If anyone I know sees this send me an email at richard@humephoto.com. I am now a fashion photographer and have been married for almost 15 years and have two beautiful girls, ages 3, and 8! I know, I know, had em late!

Anyway, I look forward to hearing from any old friends. Maybe should have used a different verb!

Best,

Richard Hume

I lived in Mammoth in 1973 and 1974. My girlfriend and later wife was Gloria Lopez who worked for Max Good in his office. I had returned from Vietnam and was able to ski every day, although I worked in the summer of 73 in construction in Mammoth. Trying to remember the brothers, Marshall and ? Marshall had blond hair and was a ski school instructor. I was friends with Shawn Stussy (ski school) and Frank Sinatra (waiter at Whiskey Creek) who later started a clothing company. My sister, Kathy Wolf also lived in Mammoth when I was there.

I had a number of great experiences in Mammoth, skied with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Cloris Leachman. Used to go over to the bar at the Mammoth Mtn Inn and would drink a couple of times with Dickie Smothers. Tried to keep up with Jean Claude Killy when he visited. Knew a number of ski school folks and ski patrol. I was asked if I wanted a extra part in the movie The Other Side of the Mountain, but I wouldn't cut my hair. Boy that was a mistake.

I had a 8mm movie camera and look a fair amount of movies, even one when some girls asked me to take movies of them streaking down Broadway. Here is a video of some skiing at Mammoth on the upper bowls and then the streakers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEq6jrGhNuw

Gloria and I divorced and I and I was single for many years, but found my true love and married in 1984, still together 30+ years later. Our daughter was Miss USA in 1998 and she is in the hospital today getting ready to have twins. Funny I found this site due to some nostalgia. Have been blessed with many experiences, Mammoth was a great time. I grew up in Whittier, CA then Orange Co., then in 1989 we moved to Jacksonville, FL and are blessed to live on the ocean. :-)
