Mount Mackenzie (BC) project is happening.

This one has been longtime coming, especially for the people of Revelstoke. You might've heard it mentioned in the Jumbo conversation. This one shouldn't be contraversial.

Something has always been plan, but many projects died over the years. The first time I heard about it was in 1995.

This place is not entirely new, like Whitetooth (aka Kicking Horse), this ski area is being transform as big player. Increase vertical, etc.

Not much time for detail, the story in the ski news section.

Sorry, couldn't figure out how to add direct link for the story.

I just hope they do it right, with respect for the area. I really wonder if North America needs another mega resort. Backcountry and real solitude are harder to come by these days, and with most developments I feel we lose some of that. Some development can be good to, so I leave it to the locals as to how they feel about it.

I've been to CAT Powder Skiing on Mt. Mackenzie as well as RK Heli, and there is little doubt in my mind that Jumbo is the more exciting development. That 6,000 vertical on MacKenzie faces directly south, and the trees were very dense, so it will mostly be trail skiing (except for about 1,000 of alpine at the top) and need lots of grooming with the exposure. It is possible that MacKenzie will also include the backside, which faces north and the top 2,000 vertical or so is used by the CAT operation. I never saw the north side because I was there in fresh snow and CAT saves the north for when the south side snow gets old or sun affected.

I agree 100% with your statement. This area claims it would have the greatest vertical drop in North America. I don't necessarly oppose this plan, there was already a ski area in place (much smaller) when I visited my friend in Revelstoke in 1996. It got even smaller after the chairlift was shut down.

As for Jumbo, it's true that area would have more interesting terrain, however the context and impact are also very different. Everyone who read the Jumbo discussion know where I stand regarding that project.
