Now that was a storm cycle! This morning was the first nice day in a long time. We have 97" at mid-mountain and 93" at the 6300 foot base. No small numbers as we've tallied 242" so far this season. The crowds came up in force and it's nice to see the ski area make some money after some tough days. They are really trying hard to change the rep here and I give them kudos for making some real progress. The snow reporting has been refreshingly honest and they update all day long so it's almost real time.
I brought my Volkl M-Rocks up to break in my new BD Method ski boots, which I plan to take BC skiing tomorrow. We did laps on Pine 'till it got busy and then went to Rainbow, on the far eastern boundary of the lower mountain. Outback and Northwest Express were on storm recovery as there was a huge rime event along with hurricane force winds on New Year's Day.
I skipped NYD to check out the monster 100 year old Poplar tree that fell in that same wind storm at one of my rental properties. Amazingly no one got killed as the tree broke off at it's base and missed houses, cars, mail boxes and even a trash can. The same can't be said for the power and cable TV lines as it knocked out service to the whole neighborhood! The local neighbors were grabbing their pitchforks and warming up the tar after my tree blacked out their Rose Bowl reception. I'm not welcome around there anymore.
Anyways, we hiked up part way to the Summit as the snow was fabulous and there is so much work to do to get the top open. Maybe tomorrow. Outback opened at 12 and NWX an hour later. I left at 1 to go skate skiing at the Nordic Center as it was just too busy for this local boy.
The plows have been working nonstop since opening day.
On my way up Pine the folks were tracking up the Cone on a sunny powder day during the busy New Year's Weekend.
An airplane view of the Cone with the Cascades Lakes Highway in winter slumber in the background.
Riders were hiking and skiing above the top of Rainbow Chair. The rime-crusted Summit Chair in the background.
Friends Wendy Oliphant and Robert Halderman are happy to be living in Bend.
Another friend Randy starting the New Year right!
