I too was overcome with the ski "Joneses" and grabbed my classic skis and headed up. My training buddy Paul is undergoing chemotherapy so I didn't suggest we hike the cone with our alpine stuff. I'm always leary this early in the season as the turns to injury ratios aren't good with A-A lava bombs lurking just under the surface. We were surprised at the good coverage for so early.
I have to admit I kept gazing over at the cinder cone (which has a very smooth bed surface and a perfect 38 degree pitch) that was quite tracked out by mid-day on Friday. The nordic skiing on Dutchman Flat is doable early as it's a pumice flat right at the 6300 foot level adjacent to the base of the Bachelor ski area.
