Today was a fun powder day. After a long wait it all came together for a typical powder day here. Thursday we got an inch, and I skied classic in preparation of a skiathlon race to be held on Saturday. Friday we got 2.5 inches and I was busy at work; I heard it was really fun with clearing skies and the top opened. My son Carson rode off the back, he said if you didn't hit too hard you wouldn't scrape through to the hard pack underneath.
Saturday was the "Bachelor Sandwich", with freezing fog in town, turning into gray bird half way up, then warm mist and fog at the ski area. Good thing I was nordic ski racing, it looked totally crappy at the alpine area across the street! I was in the Patagonia Pursuit, a continuous pursuit race that for the men starts with a 7.5K classic leg, a transition into your skate skis, and then 7.5K skate race to the finish for a total of 15K. Took me about 50 minutes and I finished 2nd in my AG. It started to snow very wet snow and we got about three inches during the day. This was the perfect healing a wind and sun raveged snowpack needed. We were still hanging onto a 100 inch base even after a three week plus drought.
This morning was two inches again. This is a very normal pattern where we get little shots, some wind, and then the surface is pretty soft. I snowboarded today with my bride (of almost 20 years) and it was cream cheese and dreamy. Then the snow started at 8:30 and it dropped another six inches by noon with dropping temps. At nine NW opened and we hit all our favorite lines. Thank you baby.
