Mt Bachelor: Another 24" overnight

While I'd rather have this problem than the drought we've had so far this year....if you get a 101" base at mid- mtn on only 158" of total snowfall... just how wet and sloppy is that? That's gotta be rip-apart-your-ACL level of thick slop!

Perception is reality, and so we remain a large but uncrowded ski area. Today certainly would be heavy snow with it falling at 32 degrees at the base area.

You did make me curious, so I compared Alta to Mt Bachelor with today's reported figures.

Alta: 50" from 108" = 0.46 ratio
Mt Bachelor: 91" from 158" = 0.57 ratio

I used the 91" base measurement because that is where they measure the YTD, not mid-mountain's depth which would reflect a larger YTD figure. No surprise we're higher but not like what you're assuming. I can't wait until Admin gets here because if it's sloppy, you'll be right and we remain a quiet backwater. If he reports it's light, both he and I will be happy!

Your calculations, while accurate, are measuring a snow pack that for us is quite atypical. That base has been settling for 8 weeks now.

And I'll be there the second weekend in March, arriving Wednesday night and leaving mid-day Sunday.

The Wasatch Weather Weenie called the snow from today's Alta storm "Cascade Concrete". And I am sure that they are happy to have gotten it.

I track maximum season base depth for a handful of resorts. Mt. Bachelor ranks #1 in ratio of base depth to season snowfall at 40%, and no surprise Mammoth is close behind at 39%. What is needed is a combination of high water content snow and high enough altitude to minimize rain and preserve the snowpack better. A lot of Rockies areas like LCC preserve as well but are lower water content snow. Most of the west coast areas are lower and do not preserve as well.

16" so far with the NWS calling for another two to five feet by Sunday morning. Then we get another storm Monday/Tuesday.

I may try to get there tomorrow or Saturday in time to wait in line. I am sure the Utahns will be rabid for powder.

It rained all night down here in town and the report is talking another 12". Looks like the pack is settling with the base depths at 96" and 106". That's six feet in three days, something usually only experienced in the Sierra Nevada. A busy schedule precludes me from getting up today but with continued snowfall into the weekend there should be some freshies left over for me.
