I got the plague about a week ago and so I wasn't able to do any snow time until yesterday. I got to ride Outback and the coverage was like it is a month from now. The snow has been fairly dense lately, so snowboards are the call. Sure has done wonders for our snowpack.
So this morning I rallied again despite my chest cold, to get a few powder turns before the next warm and windy system plowed ashore. I also wanted to compete in the Dirksen Derby, which is a banked dual slalom snowboard race. This year it is a fundraiser for Tyler Ecklund, a local rider who had a horrible accident in a competition and is now a quadriplegic.
Taking a run down Iceberg near Pine Martin Chair.
In the usual Cascadian fashion, we just keep getting small storms that are really adding up. Some stats: 4" overnight, 7" 24 hours, 23" 72 hours for a season total of 170". There's 75" at mid mountain so we're in good shape!
New snow but it got wet in a hurry.
I got in a couple pow runs but things went south fast. It went from 26 degrees to 33 degrees in like an hour. There was a 126 mph gust at the summit and I got to stand around in the rain all day waiting to race. But it was way fun, despite the raunchy conditions. I wound up getting first in the "Older but Wiser" category. Sure we're wiser.
Saturday lifeline at Pine Martin. Still pretty quiet.
An interesting observation from yesterday is that GoreTex works! I knew I was going to be in liquid sunshine so I wore a Burton AK 3L shell top and the 2L AK pants. I usually never ride in the rain, I just go home. But after hours in the driving rain my under layers were completely dry. Even my butt after sitting on wet chairs. No, I don't have a sponsorship deal with Burton or GoreTex. But I am thinking about buying another AK shell jacket, they work great and you just layer them up or down to fit the conditions. I used a Mountain Hardware polyester fill (like a belay jacket) piece underneath and was toasty all day. All I did was change out my gloves.
Just took this shot at today's Elite Men's finals at the 2010 U. S. Cyclocross National Championships in Bend's Old Mill District. There was a huge turnout of fans to watch local Ryan Trabone (pictured) take 2nd overall. No wonder they call us Bike Town USA!
