My XC ski coach recommended we wait a few days for the snow to settle before going classic skiing. During those few days it snowed a couple more inches and then yesterday dawned bluebird.
Robert and I loaded up the dogs and headed up. We brought our waxless classic skis anticipating skier packed track with possibly thin conditions. But there was a solid little pack of around 10" under glorious sunshine. It was a good thing we went because a dreaded warm front with rain and warmer temps is due in this weekend.
There are always so many more wrinkles early in the season before the prevailing westerlies fill in all those gullies. Some of those gullies, especially in the middle of this photo above treeline, are still filled after two above normal snowfall seasons.
My main ski/board buddy Robert hamming it up out in Dutchman Flat. The snow was cold and fine and sparkly, perfect way to break in the new season.
In this panoramic shot you can see the Cinder Cone, known for it's easy access, perfect pitch and snow gathering qualities. I years past I would have hiked on a day like this, but now I have a "2 foot" rule to make sure the runout has a little more cover. There were guys doing laps and it did look good!
